ALBANY, N.Y. – The Brown women's soccer team opened its 2022 season with a weather-delayed, 2-0 victory over UAlbany Friday evening. The game was originally scheduled to be played at 12 p.m., but the start time was pushed back to 5:30 p.m. due to thunderstorms in the area.
The Bears didn't let the delay slow them down as Brittany Raphino and Kira Maguire netted a pair of first-half goals to give Brown the victory.
"I give the team a lot of credit for coming home with the win today," head coach Kia McNeill said. "The adversity we faced with the weather delay, the start and stop of the warm-up, and the changed kick-off time was tough to deal with on the road. The team remained focused and while we didn't have our best game, we did enough to win."
Raphino's goal came in just the sixth minute of action when Maguire sent a ball down the left flank. Sheyenne Allen ran onto it, used some fancy footwork to beat a defender, and crossed the ball into the six-yard box where Raphino connected with her head for the first goal of the season.
Brown kept the pressure on as the defending Ivy champs earned three free kicks and one corner over the next 12 minutes before doubling the lead.
In the 18th minute, the Great Danes' defense was able to knock down a Bear corner and clear it out of the box. Kayla Duran, with pressure on her back, was able to find Maguire who sent a laser on goal from 20 yards out that found the back of the net.
The first half came to an end with Brown leading by two.
In the second half, the Bears put a pair of shots on goal, one by Lucinda Anderson and the other by Ava Seelenfruend, but neither beat the Albany goalie.
The back line of Duran, Maguire, Jessica Hinton, and Naya Cardoza stood strong and helped goalie Clare Gagne pick up the clean sheet in her first career start. Gagne made four saves on the day.
Brown outshot Albany 12-7 and earned five corners to the Great Danes' three.
Raphino led the Bears with three shots, while Seelenfreund and Anderson each had two.
"We need to continue to refine ourselves to get to a point where we are playing to our potential and that's really what these nonconference games are all about," McNeill said. "We will take the W on the road, and look forward to getting on the field again against URI on Sunday."
Brown is back in action this Sunday, Aug. 28 for a 7 p.m. matchup at Rhode Island.
