6/3/2022 4:43:00 PM | Men's Crew
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Brown's Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, and Third Varsity 8 all qualified for Saturday's A/B semifinals following a strong opening day at the 2022 IRA Championship Friday at Mercer Lake.
The V8 and 3V8 crews won their respective heats while the 2V8 crew finished second to earn spots in the top semifinal races tomorrow. As a result, all three crews have secured a 12th-place finish at minimum.
Bruno's Varsity 4 crew finished 10th in the opening time trial before placing third in the third A/B/C semifinal in the afternoon to qualify for tomorrow's Petite Final.
"We thought it was a successful day overall and we put our crews in position to take the next step forward, which was our hope heading into today's races" said Head Coach Paul Cooke '89. "Tomorrow's semifinals will be extremely competitive and we need to get our energy right for the morning. We'll look to continue building on the momentum from Sprints and from today."
The Varsity 8 crew opened the IRA Championship with a strong showing in the third heat. The Bears and Princeton Tigers quickly separated from the pack with the Bears holding a half-second lead at the midpoint of the race.
From there, Brown pulled away, gaining more than three seconds on the Tigers in the final 1,000 meters to post a time of 5:37.654 and take a 4.3-second win over Princeton (5:42.046). The Wisconsin Badgers finished third with a time of 5:43.868.

The Bears will race in the second V8 A/B Semifinal tomorrow morning at 8:50 a.m. against Cornell, Dartmouth, Syracuse, Wisconsin, and Yale. The top-three finishers from each semifinal tomorrow will advance to Sunday's Grand Final.

Dartmouth and Brown advanced directly to Saturday's A/B semifinal with six other crews: Cal, Harvard, Princeton, Syracuse, Washington, and Yale. The remaining six crews qualified in the afternoon repechages: Boston U., Cornell, Drexel, and Wisconsin.
The Bears will race in the first A/B Semifinal tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. against Boston U., Cal, Harvard, Princeton, and Wisconsin. The top-three finishers from each semifinal tomorrow will advance to Sunday's Grand Final.
A broken seat in the Boston University 3V8 crew delayed the start of the final morning heat. The race began at 10:35 a.m. – 15 minutes after its scheduled start time.
Brown, Cal, and Boston University held the top-three positions, in that order, at the 500-meter mark with Bruno holding a 1.5-second lead over the Terriers. Brown stretched its lead over Cal in the next three legs of the race and ultimately posted a time of 5:51.487 for a three-second win over the Golden Bears (5:54.451).
