5/28/2022 3:15:00 PM | Women's Crew
SARASOTA, Fla. – The Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 both qualified for tomorrow's Grand Finals while the 2V8 crew earned a spot in the Petite Final on the second day of the 2022 NCAA Championship held Saturday at Nathan Benderson Park.
Saturday's races were delayed an hour before competition began due to the weather forecast.
"We are happy with the way our crews raced today against exceptional competition," said head coach John Murphy. "Any success we have had so far is due in large part to the efforts and expertise of our boatman, Ned Foster, and our strength coach, Rob Lavallee, who are both here with us at this Championship. We are all looking forward to the Finals tomorrow."
The Varsity 8 advanced to the Grand Finals for the 15th time since 1997 with a second-place finish in the first semifinal. Top-seeded Texas jumped to an early lead and stretched out to a boat-length lead and posted a time of 6:18.459 for a 4.5-second win over Brown.
The Bears sat comfortably in second place through the first 1,500 meters of the race. In the final stretch, Brown held off a furious charge from Cal and Ohio State to hold onto second place with a narrow win over both the third-place Golden Bears and fourth-place Buckeyes.
In the second semifinal, Stanford, Washington, and Princeton finished in the top-three spots, respectively, to qualify for tomorrow's Grand Final.
The Bruno 2V8 crew finished fourth in the first A/B semifinal to just miss out on the 20th Grand Finals appearance. Princeton, Texas, and Washington pulled away from the pack with the top-seeded Longhorns outlasting Washington for the victory.
The Bears held their lead over Cal after passing the Golden Bears in the second leg of the race.
The Championship entered a lightning delay immediately following Brown's 2V8 semifinal. The second 2V8 semi began at 11:40 a.m. following a 90-minute delay. In the second semifinal, Stanford, Yale, and Virginia took the top-three spots to advance to tomorrow's Grand Final.
In the first V4 semifinal, Washington jumped to an early lead and held off top-seeded Texas throughout the race to take first with the Longhorns finishing second.
The Bears found themselves in fifth place through the first 500 meters of the V4 semifinal, slightly behind the Virginia Cavaliers. The Bears passed UVA in the second leg of the race and drew within a tenth of a second of Michigan at the 1,500-meter mark. Brown kept the charge through the finish line to clock a time of 7:15.124 to take third with a 3.5-second win over the Wolverines.
The Grand Final qualification marks the 17th time the Bears have reached the Grand Final since 1997.
