
Women's Crew Readies for 25th Consecutive NCAA Championship

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The third-ranked Brown Bears are set to compete in the 2022 NCAA Championship beginning with initial heats on Friday, May 28 and continuing through Sunday, May 30 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida.
Bruno's Varsity 8 crew is the four-seed, the Second Varsity 8 crew is the five-seed, and the Varsity 4 crew is the six-seed.

FRIDAY HEATS
Varsity 8 - Heat 4 Lane 3 - 9:36 a.m.
- The Bears are the fourth seed in the V8 race and will square off against #5 Yale, #12 SMU, #13 Virginia, #20 Northeastern, and #21 URI.
- The Bears are the fifth seed in the 2V8 race and will square off against #4 Stanford, #12 Syracuse, #13 Princeton, #20 URI, and #21 Jacksonville.
- The Bears are the sixth seed in the V4 race and will race against #3 Princeton, #11 Cal, #14 Oregon State, #19 Boston U., and #22 Jacksonville
- The 22 programs in the field compete for a national title based on a points system that weighs the finish of each boat in its respective race.
- The Championship begins with four heats for each of the three boats – the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, and varsity four – on Friday. The top two boats from each heat advance to the A/B semifinals while the remaining crews proceed to the repechage races on Friday afternoon. The top two crews from the repechages also advance to the A/B semifinals while the remainders are placed in the C/D semifinals.
- From there, the top three boats in each of the A/B semifinals move onto the grand final with the remainder proceeding to the petite final. The top three crews in the C/D semifinals advance to the C final while the rest compete in the D final.
- In the finals, each boat earns points based off its finish in its race, and the program with the most points between its three crews at the conclusion of all the races earns the title of NCAA Champion.
- The 22-team Championship field features 11 automatic qualifiers and 11 at-large selections.
- The Bears qualified for the Championship for the 25th straight season and have not missed a NCAA Championship since its inception in 1997. Brown is one of four Ivy programs in the field along with AQ Princeton, Penn, and Yale.
- The Pac-12 leads the field with five teams qualifying for the 2022 Championship: Stanford (AQ), Cal, Oregon State, USC, and Washington.
- The ACC and B1G both have three teams in the Championship. For the ACC, Virginia picked up the AQ with Duke and Syracuse earning at-large berths. For the B1G, Ohio State grabbed the AQ with Michigan and Rutgers qualifying.
- Seven conferences have one team in the field with an automatic qualifier: The A10 (Rhode Island), the AAC (SMU), the Big 12 (Texas), the CAA (Northeastern), the MAAC (Jacksonville), the Patriot League (Boston U.), and the WCC (Gonzaga).
- The Bears earned their 25th consecutive berth to the NCAA Championship on Tuesday, May 17 to remain perfect and participate in each and every NCAA Championship since its inception in 1997. Brown is one of three teams to qualify for and compete in every Championship along with conference rival Princeton and west coast powerhouse Washington.
- In the previous 24 appearances, Brown has captured seven National Titles, three runner-up finishes, and five third-place finishes. In total, the Bears have finished in the top-three of the team standings in 15-of-24 Championships.
- After a strong finish to the 2022 season with an Eastern Sprints title and tied for first finish at the Ivy Championship set the Bears up for success at the 2022 NCAA Championship.
- Brown's V8 crew earned the four seed, the 2V8 crew earned the five seed, and the V4 crew earned the six seed at this weekend's Championship. It marks the first time since 2015 all three Bruno crews are seeded within the top-6.
- At the 2015 NCAA Championship in Gold River, California, Brown finished third with 112 team points behind runner-up Cal (114 pts.) and Champion Ohio State (126 pts.).
- The Bears raced against 10 teams in the 2022 NCAA Championship field earlier this spring.
- Brown opened the spring slate with a trip to New Jersey to race against the Princeton Tigers and Ohio State Buckeyes.
- At the B1G Invitational, Brown raced against Michigan, Ohio State, Rutgers, and Stanford over the two-day Regatta. Duke was also at the Invitational but did not square off against Brown in any race.
- The Bears beat out Boston U., Northeastern, Rhode Island, and Rutgers for the team title.
- Most recently, Brown faced Penn, Princeton, and Yale at the Ivy Championships.
- The Bears hit the water at Cooper River Park for the 2022 Ivy League Championship on Sunday, May 15, the final tune-up before this weekend's Regatta.
- Bruno's V8, 2V8, 3V8, A4, and C4 crews all finished second in the conference championship with the B4 taking third. The Bears were far and away the most consistent team at the Regatta.
- In all, Brown totaled 74 team points to tie for the title with Princeton and Yale. The Tigers of Princeton received the Ivy League AQ with the highest finish in the Varsity 8 race.
- Five Bears earned All-Ivy honors following the 2022 Ivy Championships in New Jersey, headlined by First Team All-Ivy selections Dahlia Levine and Hannah Yazdani.
- Levine made the jump to the V8 crew after spending the 2021 season with the 2V8 boat. The Ardmore, Pennsylvania native has spent most of the 2022 season in the 7-seat.
- Yazdani rowed with the V8 crew for the second straight season in 2022 and holds the highest test measurements among port side rowers in the program. The McLean, Virginia native has spent the majority of the season in the 5-seat of the top boat.
- In addition to the First Team selections, a trio of Bears earned Second Team All-Ivy accolades: Maya Barnard, Zoe HasBrouck, and Olivia Vavasour.
- Brown competed at the Eastern Sprints for the first time since 2014 this season.
- The Bears swept the competition with five Grand Finals victories to capture the hardware for the 11th time since 1990.
- The Varsity 8 crew took the podium for the ninth time since 1988 with the win on Lake Quinsigamond.
