PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The sixth-ranked Brown Bears earned three second-place finishes at the 75th Eastern Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass., on Sunday. Brown also picked up a third-place finish against stiff competition.
"The team had their best performance of the year today and every person on the squad was a part of the success," said Head Coach Paul Cooke '89. "Our crews raced with energy and a real drive to win. Coach Rufus Biggs and Coach Scott Cockle have been played important roles in developing a team wide championship mindset, It was exciting to be part of it. In the morning heats, the Varsity set the tone for the day when they took control of the race with an aggressive start and finished first, ahead of the second seed, Harvard. In the afternoon finals, staring with the 5th Varsity, we had a great effort by all the crews."
Brown's Varsity 8 earned a strong second-place finish with a time of 5:59.385, as the Bears were just over a second behind first-place Yale. The Bears finished ahead of Dartmouth, Princeton, Harvard and Syracuse in the Grand Final.
"The Varsity pushed early to challenge for the lead with Yale," Cooke commented. "They went for the win and showed great physical courage. Their last 500, which secured the silver medal, was outstanding."
In the 2V8 race, Brown took home silver with another strong performance with a time of 5:49.311. The Bears were less than a second behind the winning boat from Yale.
"The 2nd Varsity had a great second 1,000 to get back into the front of the pack and nearly caught Yale for the gold," said Cooke/
Brown's third silver came in the 3V8 as the Bears posted a time of 5:56.212, edging out third-place Harvard by 0.7 seconds.
"The Third Varsity, after coming out flat in the morning heat, came out hot in the final and had an electrifying race starting a string of silver medal performances," Cooke said, speaking highly of the crew.
In the 4V8 race, Brown took third with a time of 6:05.025. The Bears earned a fifth-place finish in the 5V8 race with a time of 6:42.893.
"The Fourth Varsity was really strong in the middle of the race and passed Yale to put themselves into the medals, taking the bronze," Cooke added.
"In all our races the crews were up for it," Cooke concluded. "Each crew's efforts inspired the next one and the competitive feeling grew throughout the day. It was thrilling to see the athletes raise the standard of racing for each other. It's a very strong team and there is a lot to build on."
Up next, Brown will take part in the IRA Championships at Lake Mercer in Princeton, N.J. on June 3-5.
