Rufus Biggs ’19 – a two-time team captain at Brown and three-year member of the first varsity eight – enters his eighth season on the coaching staff for the Brown University men’s crew program in 2026-27. Biggs enters his third season as the Ever True Men's Crew Associate Head Coach in 2026-27.
In 2026, the Bears came in third place in the team standings at the Eastern Sprints before finishing in sixth in the Ten Eyck Trophy standings at the IRA National Championships. Following the conclusion of the collegiate season, Biggs served as a coach with Great Britain at the U23 World Championships.
During the 2025 season, Brown's varsity eight finished fifth in the grand final at the Eastern Sprints and picked up victories during the season against Boston University and Northeastern. The Bears won the Albert Cup against Yale for the first time since 2013 and the Stein Cup against Harvard for the first time since 2018. At the 2025 IRA Championship, Brown's varsity eight finished fifth in the grand final and the team placed fourth in the Ten Eyck Trophy standings.
As part of an outstanding 2024 season, Biggs helped lead the varsity eight to its first gold medal since 2012 and eighth victory in program history at the Eastern Sprints. The first-place finish earned the Bears First Team All-Ivy honors as well as the Ivy League Championship. The team closed out the season at number two in the IRCA/IRA Varsity 8 Poll.
In 2023, the Bears came in fourth in the team standings at the Eastern Sprints and closed the year with a sixth-place finish in the Ten Eyck team standings at the IRA National Championships.
During the 2022 season, Biggs helped guided the varsity eight to bronze at the IRA Championships with the team finishing fourth in the Ten Eyck standings. The 2022 Bears finished second at the 75th Eastern Sprints with all three of the first, second, and third eights taking silver and the fourth varsity winning bronze.
Returning to competition in the spring of 2021 following the cancellation of the spring 2020 season due to COVID-19, the Bears came in fifth place in the Ten Eyck standings at IRAs.
Following his graduation from Brown in 2019, Biggs joined the coaching staff for the 2019-20 academic year.
A recipient of Brown’s Dave Zucconi ’55 Award given for embodying the ideals of sportsmanship and fair play, Biggs is one of only a handful of rowers to captain the Bears for two years in the lengthy history of the program.
Biggs rowed in the first varsity eight for three seasons (2017, 2018, 2019) and earned a pair of bronze medals at Eastern Sprints as a junior and senior. He reached the grand final as a top-six finisher at the IRA National Championship in the first varsity eight in both 2017 and 2018.
An Academic All-Ivy and IRA All-Academic selection, Biggs won a bronze medal with the championship eight at the 2018 Head of the Charles Regatta.
Biggs competed at the U-23 World Rowing Championships during the summer of 2019 in Sarasota, Fla., in the pair for Great Britain. His crew made the grand final behind a strong semifinal race and finished sixth in the competition.
A native of Marlow, United Kingdom, Biggs attended Sir William Borlase School in the UK and was a two-time Henley Champion in the schools’ quadruple sculls event, the Fawley Cup. He also competed for Molesey Boat Club and was a Henley Champion in the Thames Cup.
Biggs graduated from Brown in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in history.
