
Men's Crew Hosts Harvard on the Seekonk for the Stein Cup

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The sixth-ranked Brown men's crew team hosts the fifth-ranked Harvard Crimson in a battle for the Stein Cup on Saturday (Apr. 9) on the Seekonk River.
Saturday's home-opener is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. with the Fourth Varsity 8 race. The Third Varsity 8 race will follow at 2 p.m. and races will continue with 20-minute intervals with the Fifth Varsity 8 (2:20 p.m.), Second Varsity 8 (2:40 p.m.), and Varsity 8 (3 p.m.).
The Stein Cup was dedicated by Walter J. Stein '17, a longtime benefactor of Brown Crew, in 1965 to be awarded to the Varsity 8 winner in the annual Brown-Harvard race.
Saturday's Stein Cup race marks the 56th between Brown and Harvard dating back to 1965. The Crimson hold the edge with a 45-10 record against the Bears with Brown's last win coming in 2018, a 1.8-second victory on the Seekonk.
Harvard recaptured the Stein Cup in 2019 on the Charles with a 1.3 second win over Brown, the most recent meeting between the Ivy League rivals.
In the last 20 meetings dating back to 2000, the Brown-Harvard race has been decided by less than five seconds on 14 occasions, less than three seconds on 10 occasions, and less than two seconds on eight occasions.
In last weekend's race at top-ranked Yale, Brown's Varsity 8 posted a time of 5:26.21 on Lake Housatonic, falling to the Bulldogs (5:23.3) by a 2.91-second margin.
The Crimson began the campaign last weekend on the Charles River against Cornell and took the Varsity 8 win with a time of 6:30.8, the Crimson's tenth straight over the Big Red.
The Bears head to Boston, Massachusetts next Saturday (Apr. 16) to race against Northeastern for the Dreissigacker Cup. Next Saturday's race marks the 56th between the Bears and Huskies dating back to 1965.
