PRINCETON, N.J. – The seventh-ranked Brown Bears closed the cup season with a clean sweep over the ninth-ranked Princeton Tigers on Lake Carnegie Saturday morning.
Brown's Varsity 8 crew pulled ahead early and took a 2.7-second victory to bring the Content Cup back to College Hill, breaking a 13-13 series deadlock with the Tigers. Conditions were described as good throughout the morning with a light to moderate headwind.
"In each race, Brown was able to take command and stay in control despite Princeton's impressive efforts," said Head Coach Paul Cooke '89. "We had a very good and competitive week of training. The oarsmen are still getting stronger and the crews are going faster. The athletes and crews are pushing each other in practice and I was impressed by how well all of the crews were able to be race-ready this morning."
The 4V8 race began the morning with Brown crossing the line in 6:27.7, just 2.2 seconds ahead of Princeton's crew on a sunny Saturday morning in the Garden State.
The Third Varsity 8 crews followed the 4V8 with the Bears posting a 3.9-second victory over the Tigers with a time of 6:13.0.
The Second Varsity 8 race was tightly contested with Brown coming out with 3.2 seconds ahead of Princeton for the victory. The Bears posted a time of 6:07.4
Saturday marked the 27th Content Cup race between Brown and Princeton dating back to 1994 with both programs capturing the cup 13 times previously. Brown's top crew pulled ahead early and stretched its lead to a boat-length just after the mid-point of the course. The Tigers started to close the gap in the final leg of the race but the Bears crossed the line in 6:00.6 to secure the Content Cup.
The 5V8 crews closed the morning of racing at 9:30 a.m. and the Bears pulled ahead early and continued to build upon their lead throughout the race, ultimately crossing the line in 6:38.4 for a 12-second margin of victory to complete the five-race sweep.
The sweep over Princeton marked the first for the Bears since 2009.
"Coach Rufus Biggs '19 deserves a lot of credit for the steady progress the team has made," Cooke added. "Biggs and Coach Scott Cockle have helped build the depth and competitiveness of the squad.
"It's an exciting time as the Championships approach and the team is improving. Every practice matters."
