GOLD RIVER, Calif. - With the 123rd IRA National Championship Regatta culminating today at Lake Natoma, several boats for the No. 9 Brown men's crew competed in Grand and Petite Finals. The Bears as a team finished tied for sixth place in the Ten Eyck standings, amassing 206 points along with Ivy League foes Dartmouth and Yale.
The Varsity Eight raced in the Petite Final, battling four other crews until the very end. Coxed by Elenna Seguin and stroked by Isaac Hillicks-Tulip, Brown's top boat crossed the finish line in 5:46.952 and finished in fifth place. This result places the V8 eleventh overall in the country.Â
The Petite Final was hotly contested at the top, with the difference between first place Penn and the Bears being 2.609 seconds.Â
The Second Varsity, coxed by Jack Mershon and stroked by Dom Valt, competed in their Grand Final after a nail biting finish in yesterday's semifinal. The Bears stroked towards the back of the field throughout the race, applying pressure in the middle 1,000 meters to try and close the gap heading into the final 500.Â
The 2V8 posted a final time of 5:50.062, trailing 1.275 seconds behind California, resulting in a sixth place finish. This is the fifth consecutive season that Brown's Second Varsity has secured a top six finish nationally, paving the way for some of this year's JV athletes to compete for seats in next season's top boat.
The Third Varsity, coxed by Rahul Ramakrishnan and stroked by Fraser Burdatt, also raced in their Grand Final today. The Bears crossed the finish line in 5:51.443, good enough for a fifth place finish. This marks the second time in the last ten years that the 3V8 has finished in the top five nationally.Â
