Huge Second Half Lifts #20 Men's Lacrosse to 20-13 Win Over #5 Yale
4/16/2022 5:09:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The 20th-ranked Brown men's lacrosse team (7-4, 2-2 Ivy League) outscored the fifth-ranked Yale Bulldogs (7-3, 3-2 Ivy League) 11-5 in the second half to take a 20-13 win Saturday at Stevenson-Pincince Field in a critical Ivy League matchup.
Brian Antonelli, Ryan Aughavin, and Devon McLane all scored four goals to pace the Bears offensively while Connor Theriault recorded 15 saves between the pipes. The victory marks Brown's second straight win over a top-10 opponent and brings them to 2-2 in conference play.
"Complete credit to the players, that was entirely a players' game," said head coach Mike Daly. "Unbelievable for our seniors to keep the team focused even after last week's game and they just kept grinding today. I'm really proud of our players, they're awesome. Really everyone, the offense answered a lot of times, the defense got their stops, faceoff, I don't know what the stats will say, but they kept working and grinding and came up with a couple key wins at the end. It was a complete team-effort, the guys on the sideline were dialed in, they gave us a great week of practice and it was as complete of a team win that we've had this year."
Aughavin put the Bears on the board quickly with the afternoon's first goal 47 seconds into the first quarter, rifling a shot to beat Yale goalie Jared Paquette (15 saves). Trevor Glavin doubled Brown's lead with 10:06 remaining in the opening quarter with his first career goal in his first career start.
After Yale cut into Brown's lead, Jack Kelly tallied his first career goal to make it 3-1 Brown with 6:17 to play in the first.
The Bulldogs responded to finish the frame and tallied three goals to take a 4-3 lead. However, McLane got his first of the afternoon with seven seconds on the clock to tie the game at 4-4 through the first quarter.
Theriault made one of his best saves of the game in the opening minute of the second quarter, stopping a point-blank shot from Chris Lyons to keep the game tied.
Aughavin struck twice and Antonelli tallied a man-up goal to give the Bears a 7-4 lead less than five minutes into the second quarter. Yale responded once again as Matt Brandau scored two and Carson Kuhl added another to bring the game back to even at 7-7.
Glavin and Kelly scored consecutive goals to make it 9-7 Bruno late in the first half, but a late goal from Leo Johnson made it a one-goal game heading into the second half.
After a 5-for-16 line in the opening half, faceoff specialist Matthew Gunty went 10-for-17 in the second half with seven ground balls to give the Bears additional offensive possessions and to keep the high-powered Yale offense on the sidelines. He finished the game with 10 ground balls.
Antonelli scored his second of the afternoon 27 seconds into the second half off a feed from Aughavin to make it 10-8 Brown and from there, the Bears held all the momentum.
Colin Hart scored a pole goal for his first career tally 10 seconds after Antonelli's marker and after Antonelli and Reed Moshyedi scored for Brown, Hart added his second career goal off a feed from Gunty with 8:16 remaining in the third quarter for an 14-9 Bruno lead.
Antonelli scored his fourth of the game to make it 15-9 with 5:29 remaining in the third quarter.
The Bulldogs stopped the Brown run with two goals to finish the third quarter, including a last-second goal from Christian Johnson to make it a four-goal game at 15-11 entering the final frame.
Not settling for the lead, Brown tallied four straight goals to open the fourth quarter to take a commanding 19-11 lead with 5:47 to play.
McLane tallied his 35th goal of the season with 3:34 to play off an assist from Glavin to make it 20-12, and a man-up goal from Yale in the waning seconds made the final score 20-13.
