NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Brown (7-19, 2-9 Ivy) rallied in both contests Saturday at George H.W. Bush '49 Field but Yale (16-10, 7-4 Ivy) was able to secure the series with back-to-back one-run victories over the Bears, 3-2 and 7-6.
GAME ONE
Brown threatened in the leadoff inning with two runners on but Bulldogs starter Mike Walsh was able to work himself out of early trouble. Yale took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom frame.
Yale attempted small ball to extend its lead but Bobby Olsen worked out of runners in scoring position for a scoreless second.
Jacob Burley showed off his arm for the 11th caught stealing of the season in the bottom of the third to strand Bulldogs.
Derian Morphew cleared the left-field fence for his third home run of the season and tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth.
Jared Johnson made it 2-1 Brown with a solo shot of his own in the top of the fifth. Yale responded with a homer of its own in the bottom half of the inning. It was the first Bulldog run since the opening frame.
Olsen tossed 6.2 innings of two-run ball in the no-decision. Paxton Meyers entered to end the seventh.
The Bears loaded the bases in the eighth after an infield hit by Reece Rapoli – his second base knock of game one. Yale made the call to the 'pen and escaped unscathed.
The Bulldogs sacrificed the winning run into scoring position in the ninth but Meyers again came up huge, ending the frame with his third punchout to force extras.
Bulldogs shortstop Mason LaPlante made a sliding stop on a Rapoli laser to end the top of the 10th and Yale was able to secure the 3-2 win in the bottom frame following a two-base walk and base hit.
Meyers was charged with the loss despite three strikeouts in 2.1 innings to fall to 1-1 on the year. Reid Easterly improved to 2-3 with 2.2 scoreless frames. Mike Walsh struck out 11 in 7.2 innings to begin the series for the Bulldogs.
Rapoli finished with two hits.
GAME TWO
Yale went ahead 4-0 after three.
Brown rallied in the fifth with three runs on three hits to cut the Yale lead to one run.
The Bulldogs got two back in the bottom frame, and Brown followed with a pair in the sixth off Morphew's two-run single, which also moved the tying run to third.
Charles Crawford went yard in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 6-all. Yale regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh with a solo shot of its own.
Tobey McDonough allowed six runs – three earned – in 5.0 innings. Santhosh Gottam (3-4) was charged with the loss but looked strong, striking out three in 3.0 innings.
