PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears took a 26-21 win over the Quinnipiac Bobcats in the Grizzly Cup Championship game to cap off the Brown 7s Tournament, held Sunday at Berylson Family Fields.
The Bears beat Army in the semifinal of the Grizzly Division, made up of the three aforementioned teams and the Sacred Heart A squad.
In the Kodiak Cup Championship, the Bowdoin Polar Bears A squad cruised to a 24-7 win over the UNE Nor'Easters A squad to win the division. The Kodiak Division had eight teams from six programs that compete at the NIRA Division II and III levels.
The Bears opened pool play against Sacred Heart A and took a 10-7 win over the Pioneers with tries from Morgan Cunningham and Gemma Ryu in the opening half.
Brown then squared off against Army in pool play and suffered a 21-10 loss to the Cadets. Olivia Duba converted the match's first try to put the Bears ahead 5-0 and Emerson Goodrich received a pass from Cunningham to convert a second-half try.
Brown closed pool play against the Quinnipiac Bobcats and Goodrich ran nearly the length of the field to put the Bears up 5-0 at the half. The Bobcats battled back in the second half with two tries and a conversion to pull ahead of Brown and take a 12-10 win.
Brown drew Army in the Grizzly Cup semifinal and Goodrich converted two first-half tries, one set up by Macilee Mackenzie, to give Brown a 10-5 halftime lead. The second half was all Brown as Mackenzie converted a try and Mahdia Parker followed with one of her own to push the lead to 24-5, where it would stand.
The Bobcats took an identical 24-5 win over Sacred Heart 'Red' in the other semifinal to set up a Bears versus Bobcats final.
Noelle Lewis opened the scoring in the final against the Bobcats and Parker added her second of the tournament to give the Bears a quick 12-0 lead. Parker scored again with a successful conversion and Zy Thomas capped the impressive first half with her first try of the tournament for a 26-0 halftime lead.
The Bobcats closed the gap throughout the second half with three tries, but a final stand from the Bruno defense sealed the 26-21 win and Grizzly Cup Championship.
In the Kodiak Division, Bowdoin took a 29-0 win over AIC in the semifinal and then cruised to a 24-7 win over UNE Blue for the hardware. The Polar Bears finished the tournament with a 5-0 record, outscoring their opponents 156-12 under head coach MaryBeth Mathews, a longtime teammate and friend to Kathy Flores.
Brown closes the 7s season at the Ivy 7s Tournament on Saturday, April 23 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
