Overall, eight of the Bears' nine starters had at least one hit, with seven recording at least two hits. The 17 hits by Brown is the most in one game since March 6, 2020 when they also had 17 against Kennesaw State.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Senior Jackson Hipp was just a double shy of hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-5 at the plate with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored.
- Junior Ray Sass went 3-for-4 with a walk and a run.
- Gunner Boree has two hits, including a two-run homer and a walk as part of a three RBI performance.
- Derian Morphew, Nathan Brasher, Jacob Burley and Reece Rappoli all had two hits apiece.
- Junior Tobey McDonough turned in a strong start for the second straight outing to begin the season, allowing one hit and one earned run over 5.0 innings of work while striking out three. He retired the first nine batters of the game and did not allow a hit until the fifth inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After stranding two runners in the first, Brown broke through in the second, starting when Hipp drilled a one-out triple to center field. Sass drew a key two-out walk to bring up Morphew, who knocked a two-strike RBI single through the right side the plate Hipp and give Brown the 1-0 lead.
- In the third, After Burley singled and Rappoli walked with one out, Hipp stepped to the plate and launched a two strike, three-run homer over the right field wall to open up the lead to 4-0.
- Brown tacked on three more runs to blow the game open in the fourth. Brasher led off with a single and Boree followed by poking a 2-0 pitch over the left field fence for his first career homer to make it 6-0 Bears. Three consecutive hits then loaded the bases for Jared Johnson, who drove home Burley with a sac fly to make it 7-0.
- USF got on the board in the fifth, making it 7-1 on a fielder's choice after a pair of walks and a single opened the inning.
- The Bulls got another run back in the sixth before Brown padded the lead with two more in the seventh. Sass singled and came around to score on a wild pitch, and Boree tacked on his third RBI of the game with a double down the left field line to score Morphew.
- USF scored twice in the seventh and once in the eighth to pull within 9-5 before Gauge Lockhart closed the door with a scoreless ninth.
- "It was good to see us put together a string of hits and good at bats. One of the big parts was our ability to turn the lineup over. Ray Sass did a great job of that tonight and his walk in the second was huge because we were able to put another 13 or 14 pitches on their starter. Getting their starter out in the third inning was key. We capitalized on our strengths and passed the baton."
- "Tobey was really sharp. He continued to compete and attack the hitters. The impact of long offensive innings was he was left sitting there in the dugout, and he was not adversely affected at all. He kept a strong offensive lineup off balance all night and we're proud of the way he pitched."
