INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Freshman Nathan Brasher went 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple and two runs scored.
- Jacob Burley went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.
- Derian Morphew had a hit and a run scored, and Ryan Marra added an RBI with a sac fly.
- Bobby Olsen tossed 4.1 innings of relief, allowing just one run on three hits and one walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bulls started quick, jumping out to an early 5-0 lead in the first two innings, thanks in large part to centerfielder Drew Brutcher, who clubbed a solo home run in the first inning, and added a three-run shot in the second.
- The Bears' pitching staff rebounded and allowed just one earned run and one walk over the final seven innings, including 4.1 innings of relief from Olsen.
- Brown clawed its way back into the game starting in the fourth inning when Brasher had an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error, then scored two batters later on an RBI double by Burley.
- After the Bulls pushed another run across in the fifth, Brown got the run right back in the sixth, starting the inning with consecutive singles by Morphew and Brasher. After moving up 90 feet on a wild pitch, Marra plated Morphew with a sac fly to right field to make it a 6-2 game.
- Brasher picked up his third hit of the game in the eighth inning, drilling a one-out triple to the right-center field gap, and racing home one batter later on a passed ball to trim the deficit to three, but that was as close as the Bears would get.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: GRANT ACHILLES
- "After giving up five runs early, we did a good job of holding the score to give our offense a chance. We closed the gap but just not enough. South Florida is a quality team that helped us learn a lot internally. Now it's back to work to be the best version ourselves."
