Men's Hockey Drops Game 1 of ECAC First Round Series at St. Lawrence
3/4/2022 9:59:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
CANTON, N.Y. – The St. Lawrence Saints took a 4-1 victory over the Brown Bears in game one of the ECAC Hockey First Round Series Friday night at Appleton Arena to take the series lead.
"It was a game that went how we thought it would go, low-scoring," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "They win 4-1 but that's a game that could have gone either way; it was a 2-1 game and we hit the post in the third and had several chances.
We have to understand that it is a series and it's not over yet. We'll play hard tomorrow and see where the chips fall and try to get it to a winner-take-all game three. There are a lot of things I liked about tonight and there are other things we need to clean up, but overall, it was a pretty good hockey game, we just came up on the wrong end of it."
Buoyed by a raucous Appleton crowd, Josh Boyer put the Saints ahead 2:24 into the opening period, shooting from the slot off a feed from Nicholas Trela to beat Brown goaltender Mathieu Caron (22 saves).
St. Lawrence had the night's first three power play chances following the opening goal, but came up empty with three shots on goal on the advantages and finished the period with an 8-6 edge in shots on goal.
Justin Jallen tied the game 5:36 into the second period on Brown's first power play chance of the game. Jallen received a pass from Luke Krys below the right circle and quickly wired an off-angle shot on Emil Zetterquist (21 saves) for his ninth goal of the season. Samuli Niinisaari picked up the secondary assist on the goal.
Aleksi Peltonen put the Saints back on top just over three minutes later, picking up a loose puck in the Brown zone and beating Caron on a breakaway.
The Bears had multiple chances to tie the game in the third, including a clear 2-on-1 rush six minutes into the frame that was blown dead due to a St. Lawrence forward crashing into Brown's net and knocking it off its moorings.
Jonny Russell had a golden chance halfway through the period, but his shot from the slot clanked off the post and play continued.
Max Dorrington doubled the Saints' lead at 15:42 of the third period, beating Caron with a shot from the top of the left circle. The goal came 22 seconds after a lengthy review of the game clock.
The Saints added an empty net goal with 1:37 remaining to push their lead to 4-1.
