No. 9 Men's Crew Sends Several Boats to the Semifinals at the IRA National Championship Regatta

GOLD RIVER, Calif. - With the 123rd IRA National Championship Regatta officially underway, No. 9 Brown men's crew took to the water at Lake Natoma in pursuit of several spots in tomorrow's AB semifinals.Â
The day started off with the Varsity Eight competing in their heat race, trotting out a lineup that hadn't been used before this season. The trust that Men's Crew Norman W. Alpert '80 Head Coaching Chair Paul Cooke '89 has in his athletes paid off, as Bruno's top boat finished in third place with a time of 5:44.770, good enough to qualify for tomorrow's AB semifinal.
While Elenna Seguin remained the coxswain, the Bears inserted Isaac Hillicks-Tulip into the stroker position, with athletes such as Tom Griffin, Isaac Thurnham, and David Person rowed in seats towards the middle and back of the boat for the first time this season.
The V8 raced hard and stayed within striking distance of second place Penn and first place Washington. A late push in the final 500 meters brought them within two seconds of the Quakers, while several crews behind the Bears were unable to make up any ground.Â
The Second Varsity, coxed by Jack Mershon and stroked by Dom Valt, crossed the finish line in 5:49.410 and earned a second place finish. Bruno finished less than three seconds behind first place Princeton, with the 2V8 stroking at a consistent pace throughout the race. While Luca Cassina and Sean Egan raced with the Varsity for portions of the regular season, both athletes provided a boost to Brown's second boat that helped propel them to the AB semifinals.
Much like the 2V8, the Third Varsity raced well and earned a second place finish. By crossing the finish line in 5:53.490, the 3V8 punched their ticket to the AB semifinals after building a comfortable cushion over Ivy League foes Yale and Columbia. Coxed by Rahul Ramakrishnan and stroked by Fraser Burdett, the Bears finished within three seconds of first place Harvard.Â
The final race of the day took place in the afternoon, with the Varsity Four competing in one of three semifinal races. Coxed by Adelaide Poulson and stroked by Reed Lucke, Brown finished in fifth place with a time of 6:39.900. This result qualifies the V4 for a spot in the third final tomorrow morning. Â
