PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball earned a split of Saturday's doubleheader against Penn behind a stellar performance in the circle by Alexis Guevara and timely hitting, beating Penn 9-3.
The Bears dropped the first game of the doubleheader 7-2 after not being able to capitalize on getting runners on base.
It was a strong day in the circle for the Bears as Lauren Innerst threw a career-high nine strikeouts in game one and Guevara had a career-high six strikeouts in game two.
GAME 1: PENN 7, BROWN 2
The Bears left nine batters on base in the opening game of the series against Penn, unable to take advantage of scoring chances.
Brown finished the game with seven hits, two each from Katie O'Leary, Elayna Tsiouplis and Kat Clum.
After Penn scored in the top of the first, Brown responded with a run as Tsiouplis singled home Leah Carey who had walked with one out. The Bears had runners on second and third with two outs but a hard liner was caught in center to end the inning.
In the third, Carey led off the inning with a single and O'Leary walked. They would move to second and third on a groundout but again were left stranded after a groundout and strikeout.
Penn broke the 1-1 tie taking advantage of a two-out error that allowed a run to score after a two-out double two batters earlier.
Brown stranded a runner at third in both the fourth and fifth and Penn added to its lead with a solo shot in the fifth. The Quakers added two runs in both the sixth and seventh to take a 7-1 lead.
With two outs in the seventh Brown got another run on the board with back-to-back doubles by O'Leary and Tsiouplis but that was all they would manage, falling 7-2.
GAME 2: BROWN 9. PENN 3
Guevara earned her second win of the season with a complete game performance as Brown took advantage of its baserunners to beat Penn 9-3 and even the three-game series.
Guevara got off to a slow start, allowing three of the first four batters to reach and after a strikeout gave up a two-run double. Guevara hit the next batter to load the bases again but got a strikeout to end the inning.
Brown's offense started slow but Guevara kept the Bears in the game, retiring the next 13 batters.
"I think Alexis did a great job after that first inning of making adjustments," said head coach Kate Refsnyder. "This is a game of adjustments and she is a smart ballplayer. Her and [catcher] Moe Kastens did a really good job changing their attack to the batters."
Brown finally got on board in the third as O'Leary hit a line drive home run over the center field wall. The solo home run was the first of the season for O'Leary and cut Penn's lead in half.
After a foul out, Dara English singled up the middle and scored as Clum hit a double to the center field wall to tie the game at two.
In the fourth, Brown took advantage of mistakes by Penn to break the game open. Back-to-back walks and a fielding error loaded the bases. Brianna Rodriguez drew a walk for the first run in the inning. A throwing error by Penn allowed two more runs to score. Two batters later, a sacrifice fly to center by English scored another run. Brown's scoring continued as Clum singled to bring home O'Leary. In total, Brown scored five runs in the inning while collecting just one hit.
Penn finally got two baserunners in the sixth with back-to-back one-out singles but Guevara got a strikeout and groundout to end the inning.
Rodriguez doubled to start Brown's sixth inning and two batters later Tsiouplis hit her second home run of the year with a blast to center to make it 9-2. A solo home run by Penn in the seventh would be all Guevara would allow.
