Women's water polo earns win over Cal Baptist to start Bruno Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's water polo got off to a strong start in the Bruno Classic with a 12-10 win over Cal Baptist on Friday night (Feb. 4). Both Lily Weiser and Sierra Martin finished the game with three goals.
Brown (2-3) had a 2-1 lead after the first quarter with goals from Zoe King and Emily Suong.
After Cal Baptist scored a goal early in the second to tie the game, Weiser tallied two goals and Martin added one during a one-minute stretch to increase the lead to 5-2. Claire Pisani picked up a goal just under one minute later to close out a 4-0 run as Brown took control of the game.
Weiser's third goal of the game put Brown up 7-3 early in the third, a quarter that featured nine goals between the two teams with Cal Baptist winning the quarter 5-4. Brown's remaining goals came from Katharine Knowles, King and Katie Klien but the Lancers pulled within two heading to the final quarter play.
A goal from Cal Baptist less than a minute into the fourth made it a one-goal game. In response, Martin scored back-to-back goals to push Brown's advantage to three. Cal Baptist scored a goal with just under four minutes remaining in the game but Brown kept the Lancers off the scoreboard for the rest of the game to secure the win.
Shauna Franke earned her first win of the season in goal, collecting six saves in the win.
Brown will play three games on Saturday (Feb. 5) as play in the Bruno Classic continues. The Bears will start the day against La Salle at 10:30 a.m. before playing Pomona-Pitzer (4:00 p.m.) and Siena (7:00 p.m.).
