Fencing has two individual champions at NEIFC Championships

WALTHAM, Mass. – Brown fencing was the three-weapon team champion at the 2022 NEIFC Championships on Saturday. Anika Breker was the individual foil champion and Arianna Baffa was the individual epee champion.
The Bears were the top foil and epee squads in the championships and Brown's foil was named the Vitale Cup winners.
Breker was the top qualifier in pool play, winning all five her qualifying matches. In the first round Breker beat Edith Po of Wellesley College, 15-3, before beating teammate Anisha Kasi, 15-7, in the semifinals. Breker earned the title with a 15-3 win over Zoe Tolbert from Vassar College.
In the individual epee competition, Baffa was named the No. 3 seed overall. Baffa earned a 15-13 win in the first round against Kaitlyn Gill from Tufts. In the semifinals, Baffa beat Kimberly Kimura from Wellesley College, 15-14. Facing off against teammate Sofia Yee-Wadsworth, Baffa earned a 15-12 win in the finals.
In the team competition, Brown won 100 of its 119 bouts. The Bears won 38 of 40 bouts in the foil, winning five more bouts than second-place Wellesley. Brown was tied for first in the epee with both Brandeis and Vassar, winning 32 of 40 bouts. The Bears finished in fourth in the sabre, winning 30 of 39 bouts.
