PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's lacrosse team fell to Hofstra 12-7 Tuesday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
The Bear defense was able to keep the Pride offense quiet for much of the first half, but just weren't able to get their own offense going consistently until late in the game.
On the day, Leah Caputo led Brown with three points from two goals and one assist. Jackie Mason scored twice for the second game in a row and Claire Jeschke picked up two assists. Maggie Fowler, Mia Mascone, and Sophia DeRosa all also scored for the Bears, while Alaina Parisella recorded one assist.
In goal, Erin Tucker made 11 saves including a stretch of five straight that went from 6:20 remaining in the first quarter until the 8:33 mark of the second. Erin Schafer and Paige Gillen each recorded two ground balls.
A definite bright spot for the Bears was the success they had on draw controls throughout the game. In total, they won 14 to Hofstra's nine, but the Bears outdrew the Pride in the first half by a 7-2 margin. Emmie Lau recorded a game-high eight draw controls.
Hofstra scored in the first minute of play, but Brown quickly answered with Macsone's goal just 30 seconds later. The Pride then went on to score three in a row to open up a 4-1 lead before Caputo's free position goal made it 4-2 with 9:39 remaining in the first half.
After Hofstra's fourth goal at 8:20 of the first frame, the Bear defense clamped down and didn't allow the Pride to find the back of the net again until 3:54 of the second. The two sides would go into the half with Hofstra leading 5-2.
The Pride offense really picked up steam in the third quarter, doubling its lead from the first half by scoring five during the first 15 minutes of the second. The Bears got one back late when Parisella found a cutting Mason who buried her third goal of the season to cut the lead to 10-3.
Brown continued the momentum as the fourth quarter began, with Mason picking up her second goal of the day less than two minutes into the frame. Unfortunately for the Bears, Hofstra made a Brown comeback a bit tougher they responded with two of their own to push the lead to 12-4 with seven minutes remaining.
The Bears showed life in the closing minutes, scoring three more times from three different players during the final five minutes of action, but Hofstra had built too large of a lead for Brown to come all the way back.
The Bears will play their third straight home game this Saturday, Feb. 26 when they welcome No. 1 Boston College to Stevenson-Pincince Field for a 3:30 p.m. start.
