
Mauricio scores 21 in tough loss at Penn

PHILADELPHIA – Brown women's basketball hung in the game but eventually fell to Penn 67-53 on Saturday (Feb. 19). Isabella Mauricio led the Bears with 21 points in the loss.
Mauricio hit the 20-point mark for the sixth time this season and was 3-for-7 from three and 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Mauricio has now hit a three in 19-straight games and in all but one game this year. The freshman also led Brown with three assists and pulled down three rebounds.
Kyla Jones was second on the team with 16 points and led Brown's defense with four steals. Jones also collected four rebounds. Jones has now reached double-figures in four-straight games and eight of her last nine.
Maddie Mullin hit three threes to finish third on the team with nine points. Mya Murray added four points and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
Brown outshot Penn with the Bears shooting 43 percent from the floor and Penn shooting 39.7 percent but the Quakers took 26 more shots than Brown. Penn held an 18-2 advantage on the offensive glass, leading to a 14-0 advantage in second chance points. Brown also struggled with turnovers, committing 18, leading to 21 points for Penn.
The Bears were down eight early before making a run in the middle of the first quarter. Jones hit back-to-back layups and a three by Mauricio pulled Brown within one. After a miss by Penn, Mullin hit her first three of the game to put Brown up 14-12. The first quarter would end tied at 14.
The second quarter went back and forth with Jones tying the game with a layup and Mauricio hitting a three to answer a Penn three to keep the game tied at 19. Penn used a 9-0 run to take control of the quarter. Jones would end the run, hitting three free throws in the final minute of the quarter as Brown trailed by six at the half.
Penn increased its lead to 13 three minutes into the second half before a layup from Mauricio and another three by Mullin cut the deficit to eight. Mullin's third three of the game with 5:24 left in the quarter made the score 38-32 but Penn continued to have answers for Brown, pushing the lead back to 11. Mauricio drilled a three to beat the buzzer making it an eight-point game heading to the fourth quarter.
Brown cut the lead to five on two free throws by Mauricio with 6:33 lead but five-straight Penn points pushed the deficit by back to 10. The Bears kept battling, cutting the lead to six on a layup by Jones and two free throws by Mauricio but a 5-0 run by Penn pushed the lead back to 13, ending any chance of a comeback.
Penn was led by 21 points from Mia Lakstigala, who was 5-for-10 from three. Jordan Obi finished the game with 19 points and 11 rebounds and Kayla Padilla had 11 assists.
