Men's Hockey Opens Weekend Series with 5-1 Win at LIU
12/3/2022 11:57:00 PM | Men's Ice Hockey
EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The Brown Bears (4-7-1) tallied a pair of goals in both the first and second periods and held off a third period push from the LIU Sharks (3-10-1) to take a 5-1 non-conference Saturday night at Northwell Health Ice Center.
It was another game where I thought we strung together some really good shifts, a few good periods, and good pushback from LIU in the third and I thought we held pretty strong and Caron was outstanding again. He gives us an opportunity to win every game we play," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "It will be much harder tomorrow, again that's a pretty good hockey team that just beat Ohio State and they found a way to make it interesting in the third in a 4-0 game and had us on our heels. So, we need to be ready to go as soon as the puck drops tomorrow night."
Gavin Puskar put the Bears on the board with his second goal in as many games at 17:14 of the opening period. Puskar sat on the far post and redirected a Luke Krys centering pass through Vinnie Purpura (12 saves). Jordan Tonelli also assisted on the opening goal.
Cole Quisenberry doubled Brown's lead less than two minutes later with his third of the season at 19:02 of the first. Quisenberry clearned up a rebound from a Samuli Niinisaari point shot with Jackson Munro picking up the secondary assist.
After consecutive LIU penalties late in the second, Ryan Bottrill blasted a one-timer past Purpura at 15:38 of the frame to make it 3-0 on the two-man advantage. Luke Krys made a nice move to shake a defender at the top of the zone before finding Bottrill just below the left dot for the quick strike.
Just over a minute later, Matt Sutton tallied his third of the year for Brown's second power play goal of the game. Bradley Cocca and Brett Bliss assisted on the goal.
The Sharks replaced Purpura with Brandon Perrone to start the third and pushed back on the Brown offense. Adam Goodsir cut into Brown's lead 4:01 into the frame with Cade Mason and Patriks Marcinkevics picking up assists on the power play goal.
Mathieu Caron (32 saves) shut the door for the rest of the frame, finishing the final 20 minutes with 13 saves.
Ryan Shostak buried his first goal of the year with 20 seconds remaining with Purpura pulled for the empty-net marker and 5-1 final.
