Women's soccer claims third straight Ivy League Title
11/5/2022 8:02:00 PM | Women's Soccer
The Bears have now won 15 Ivy League titles, the most in league history and two more than any other program. Brown also claims the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
"Absolute elation," head coach Kia McNeill said. "This is incredible, it's a huge testament to the team and the work they put in, not only this year, but the tradition of the team that they have carried on throughout the years. It's not easy to go undefeated and win the Ivy League and to do it three years in a row is incredible. I'm so proud of the team, the coaching staff, and the support staff that has helped us get to this place."
Brown earned the Ivy title due to their conference winning percentage based on available points. Since the Bears' game this weekend against Yale was canceled, points alone could not be used to decide the league champion. Brown's conference winning percentage based on available points was .889 (16 out of 18 available points), while Harvard, who finished in second place, had a percentage of .810 (17 out of 21 available points).
After the Yale cancelation, Brown played Springfield College Saturday to wrap up its regular season and to celebration Senior Day. The Bears earned the 7-2 victory over the Division III opponent.
Brittany Raphino opened the scoring with her ninth goal of the season, while Miya Grant-Clavijo scored twice and Laryssa Hamblen, Claire Myers, Hayley Houston, and Courtney Cummings all also found the back of the net. Kira Maguire had two assists.
"I think it was crucial to get this last game in, especially as a time to celebrate winning the Ivy League," McNeill said. "I think they deserved that last opportunity to play together, play for each other in the regular season. And then to use this game as a warmup for the NCAA Tournament was critical.
"The biggest thing for me was having the opportunity to have a true senior day for our seniors and give them the respect and honor that they deserve."
The Bears' eight-member senior class is made up of Morgan Turcotte, Sheyenne Allen, Laryssa Hamblen, Brittany Raphino, Ava Seelenfreund, KK Haug, Caylah Griffin, and Kayla Duran. All eight players were honored pregame and saw meaningful minutes throughout the contest.
This group of seniors has gone 18-0-2 in Ivy League play over the last three seasons and will graduate as the first undefeated senior class in Ivy play at Brown since 1986. Their 37 overall victories are the most in any three-year stretch in program history.
"They're one in a million," McNeill said. "They're an incredible group of young women. They've bought in from the first day they got on campus here and there's no wonder why they've been able to go undefeated three years in a row. They've always put their head down and worked. They're a really close-knit group and they bring others along and lead really well. So, I'm really happy for them."
Brown now turns its attention to the NCAA Tournament. The Bears will find out who, and where, they will play during the NCAA DI Women's Soccer Selection Show this Monday, Nov. 7 starting at 4 p.m.
The show will stream live on NCAA.com.
