PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's water polo team fell to top-seeded Princeton in the semifinals of the NWPC Tournament on Saturday, 12-7.
Brown was led by Cole Atwell and Ilias Stothart with three goals apiece. Kole Newman finished the game with eight saves for the Bears.
"I felt in the first half we were able to hold the off from going on a run and kept fighting," said Felix Mercado, Head Coaching Chair for Water Polo. "The game got away from us in the third quarter. Credit to Princeton for staying on their game plan and executing. We need to regroup and get ready for the third-place game."
The Bears fell behind 3-0 after the first quarter with Brown's first goal coming from Evan Moore more than halfway through the second. Stothart answered a Princeton goal with his first tally of the day to make it a 4-2 game at halftime.
Brown pulled within one twice during the early part of the third quarter as both Stothart and Atwell found the net but Princeton pulled away, scoring the final four goals of the quarter, taking a 9-4 lead to the fourth.
The Bears got three-straight goals in the fourth quarter with two from Atwell and one from Stothart, making the game 10-7 but that was as close as Brown would get.
UP NEXT
Brown will finish up play at the NWPC Tournament in the third-place game against either Harvard or St. Francis Brooklyn. The game will be on Sunday (Nov. 20) at 11 a.m.
