STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Brown women's basketball picked up its first win of the season with a 75-62 victory over Wagner on Sunday night.
Brown (1-2) earned the win behind huge performances from Kyla Jones and Gianna Aiello. Jones led the Bears with a career-high 32 points, becoming the first Bear to score 30 points in a game since Sheyna Mehta had 37 against Yale in 2019. Jones was 13-for-18 from the floor and 5-for-7 from the free throw line, while picking up three steals.
Aiello was dominant on the glass for Brown, pulling down a career-high 18. It was the most for a Bear since Erika Steeves had 19 against Hampton in 2017. Aiello also had eight points and led the team with five assists and four blocked shots. Aiello also grabbed three steals against the Seahawks.
Isabella Mauricio finished with 16 points, going 5-for-6 from the free throw line, and Mackenzie Leahy added 12.
Brown had its best shooting night in almost a year, hitting 50 percent from the floor. It was the best percentage since the Bears shot 51 percent against Bryant last season. Brown dominated the game inside, outscoring Wagner 40-22 in the paint. The Bears also held a 14-5 advantage in fast break points.
The Bears got off to a bit of a slow start, falling behind Wagner (2-1), 19-12 after the first quarter. Brown quickly erased that deficit, going on an 8-0 run to start the second quarter. Wagner took a six-point lead that was again erased with a 6-0 run by the Bears but two free throws put Wagner on top at halftime.
Jones kept Brown in the game in the first half, scoring 18 of Brown's 30 points in the first 20 minutes.
Aiello scored four points and Mauricio hit a three as Brown built a seven-point lead four minutes into the third quarter. After a Wagner bucket, Leahy responded with a three and Aiello's fast break layup put the Bears up 51-40. With two minutes left in the quarter, Jones hit a jumper but three-straight points from Wagner made it a 10-point game after three.
Brown pushed its lead to 12 after a three-point play from Jones and a couple minutes later, Mauricio beat the shot clock with a three to keep the lead at 12. Wagner cut the lead to seven with just over two minutes left but the Bears went five-for-six from the free throw line to ice the game.
