Men's Hockey Drops Season-Opener at Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Brown Bears (0-1-0, 0-1-0 ECAC) surrendered two goals in the second period as the Yale Bulldogs (1-0-0, 1-0-0 ECAC) opened the 2022-23 season with a 2-0 win Saturday night at Ingalls Rink.
"The guys had a great week of preparation in terms of practice and how we wanted to play in terms of our identity and then the puck dropped and we got away from certain aspects of how we wanted to play," said head coach Brendan Whittet '94. "We were very, very undisciplined and we were short a full period of hockey. Ten penalties usually doesn't lead to anything good. We need to be much more disciplined and then we need to understand we have to play a certain way to be successful."
"The positive is I know we can play a lot better because I've seen it in practice. I know that there are going to be setbacks in a season, you're going to have good games and bad games, but the main thing I want the guys to control is their effort, their intelligence, and I want them to play Brown Hockey, which to me is fast, heavy, and detailed. I thought we got away from that identity and we won't tomorrow."
Brown and Yale went scoreless in the opening 20 minutes with both Mathieu Caron (33 saves) and Nathan Reid (22 saves) making early saves. Brown killed off a pair of hooking penalties in the early part of the period with Yale killing off a tripping penalty halfway through the frame.
The Bulldogs broke the scoreless deadlock at 7:15 of the second as Niklas Allain found the back of the net on Yale's fourth power play chance of the game.
Six minutes and a pair of Brown penalties later, Briggs Gammill doubled Yale's lead with another power play tally.
The Bears had an early power play chance in the third period to cut into Yale's lead, but Bruno shots were blocked and stopped by Reid to end the scoring threat.
Brown killed 1:50 of a 5-on-3 Yale power play halfway through the second to remain within striking distance of the Bulldogs.
