SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Brwon women's tennis team lost to Syracuse 5-2 Saturday afternoon in the team's first match of 2022.
"In our first dual match since March 1, 2020, we competed competently against a strong Syracuse team," head coach Lucie Schmidhauser said. "Our line 1 doubles of Ali Benedetto and Lindsey Hofflander played a flawless match of doubles, completely overwhelming their opponents with their controlled aggression and net play.
"In singles, Britany Lau did an excellent job outcompeting her All-American opponent with her crafty play. Brit also showed courage in clutch moments of the match by having clear strategy and fearlessly sticking to it. Gabby Soliman competed well and it is unfortunate her opponent needed to retire before the match could be finished.
"The challenge for our young team is to raise our level when the opponent ups their level of play. We started out very strong on several courts in both singles and doubles, but were not able to maintain or raise the level of play in clutch moments, which will be the focus moving forward as we continue with our season."
Britany Lau and Gabby Soliman earned the Bear's two team points on the day. Lau won No. 1 single 6-4, 6-4 and Soliman took No. 3 singles 7-5, 2-4 (ret).
Ali Benedetto and Lindsey Hofflander also teamed up to win No. 1 doubles 6-2.
