TAMPA, Fla. – The 67th-ranked Brown women's tennis team (12-3) defeated the South Florida Bulls (5-11), 4-3, on their first match of the Florida road trip.
"I was really proud of our team for the fight, grit, and their 'never say never' attitude in our match against USF today," Broadbent Family Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser said.
In doubles, Dani Ben-Abraham and Hannah Shen lost their first-line match to Sienna Leeson and Margherita Marcon, 6-3. On the second line, Abigail Lee and Chloe responded with a 6-3 win over Francesca Miglio and Melisa Senli. Anne Yang and Ali Maguy edged out Dharani Niroshan and Loana Vargas, 7-5, at the third line to secure the doubles point.
"Abbey and Chloe did a great job in their doubles match, outmatching their opponents with their aggressive and precise play. At line three, Annie and Ali came out firing and had a big lead to start their set. Their opponents adjusted and put a lot of pressure on us. Even when the score got close, Ali and Annie stayed calm and pulled through in the end, giving our team a one to zero lead heading into singles," Schmidhauser added.
In singles, the Bears maintained the lead. At line one, Hannah Shen lost to Melisa Senli, 6-0, 6-1. At line five, Anne Yang earned the Bears' first singles win, defeating Francesca Miglio, 6-2, 6-0. Dani Ben-Abraham fell at line two to Sienna Leeson, 6-3, 6-2. Ali Maguy persevered, losing 2-6 in the first set before coming back 6-0, 7-5. At line four, Abigail Lee picked up the third singles win for the Bears, beating Josefine Falster, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. Sari Woo dropped her match at line six to Amelie Drukerova, 4-6, 6-7(5), 8-10.
"In singles, South Florida came out swinging in the first sets, and we quickly found ourselves down a set in five of the six matches. Annie was able to overwhelm her opponent with precision and relentless pressure that her opponent couldn't handle. Ali settled down after losing the first set and went into the second set with much better clarity and increased consistency. She won the second set handily, but her tough opponent was not ready to go down easily. Ali found herself down two to four in the third set. Ali kept battling hard, adjusted her targets, and outcompeted her opponent six to four in the third set with some incredibly gutsy play."
"Abbey found herself losing one to six, zero to three in her match at line four. She stayed calm, made some strategic adjustments, and kept battling for every ball. She was able to win the second set, and in the third set, she showed a lot of courage to close out her match and clinch the match for our team! It was a gutsy win for our team today, and I am really proud of everyone's grit, fight, and effort." Schmidhauser concluded.
