FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Brown women's tennis team (12-4) ended their seven-match winning streak against the FGCU Gulls (14-5) with a 4-2 loss on the final day of their Florida road trip
"Tough day for the Bears today. FGCU came out really strong in doubles and our energy was low at the start," Broadbent Family Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser said.
In doubles, Abigail Lee and Chloe Qin fell in their match on the second line to Anjali Kotecha and Cecilie Maeland, 6-3. At the first line, Dani Ben-Abraham and Hannah Shen fell to Nora Svensson and June Bjork, 6-4. Since the Gulls earned the doubles' point, the match between Anne Yang and Ali Maguy and Ashley Matz and Africa Burillo Berezak at the third line did not finish.
"We were not able to turn the momentum and went down 0-1." Schmidhauser added.
In singles, Ali Maguy lost at line three to Ashley Matz, 6-2 and 6-1. At line five, Anne Yang earned the Bears' first singles win of the match beating Sabrina Jaramillo, 6-1 and 6-3. Yang remains undefeated in singles this spring with 11 wins. Abigail Lee followed with the second win at the fourth line, topping Cecilie Maeland, 6-1 and 6-4. Chloe Qin, at the sixth line, dropped her match to Anjali Kotecha, 6-1 and 6-3, while at line two, Dani Ben-Abraham fell to June Bjork, 6-1 and 6-3. The match between Hannah Shen and Nora Svensson at the first line was not completed.
"In singles, Annie did a great job once again with her gameplan clarity, moving her opponent mercilessly around the court and using angles to make her opponent uncomfortable. Abbey competed very well in her match and stayed courageous in the second set when the score got close, winning the last 3 games of her match. FGCU competed very well and we were not able to match their intensity on the rest of the singles courts today."
"I look forward to our match against Yale this Saturday as we start the Ivy League part of our season." Schmidhauser concluded.
