NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Brown women's tennis team (12-5) fell to the No. 50 Yale Bulldogs (14-2), 4-1, in its Ivy League opener.
"Tough day for the Bears," Broadbent Family Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser said. "We competed really hard in doubles and had some chances we didn't capitalize on in the end to get the doubles point. Hannah and Dani played one of the best matches of the season in doubles, beating a team ranked 35th in the country." Schmidhauser continued.
In doubles, Anne Yang and Ali Maguy lost to Erin Ha and Shyla Aggarwal on court three, 6-2. On court one, Dani Ben-Abraham and Hannah Shen beat the 35th-ranked Orla Ogilvy and Leena Friedman, 6-3. With the score tied, Abigail Lee and Chloe Qin led at the second line but lost to Angela Huang and Julia Werdiger, 6-4.
Transitioning to singles, Dani Ben-Abraham's second-line match ended early due to injury with a 3-1 lead. At the first line, Hannah Shen lost to Orla Ogilvy, 6-4, 6-2. On line six, Sari Woo fell to Erin Ha, 6-3, 6-3. Abigail Lee secured the Bears' first point, defeating Angela Huang at the fourth line, 6-4, 6-2. Meanwhile, at the third line, Ali Maguy's match against Julia Werdiger went unfinished after Maguy took the first set, 6-4, and Werdiger leveled it, 6-3. Anne Yang's fifth-line match versus Shyla Aggarwal also did not finish.
"In singles, Abbey played a tactically smart match, using her variety and touch to beat a quality opponent. Ali played a great first set and competed very well when the match was clinched. Unfortunately, Dani had to withdraw from her match due to injury, leading her opponent 3-1 and playing great," Schmidhauser said.
"Even though the match didn't go our way, I'm proud of the team and their fight. These moments of adversity will make the players more resilient moving forward," Schmidhauser concluded.
