Women's basketball falls on last second layup at Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Brown women's basketball fell in a close battle to Yale ,67-69, as the Bulldogs scored on a layup with under two seconds left in the game.
Isabella Mauricio led the way for the Bears, hitting a career-high mark of 23 points. Mauricio scored over 20 points for the third time this season, going 8-for-14 from the field and 5-for-9 from three-point range. Mauricio added six assists and four rebounds.
Kyla Jones added 17 points after missing the last two games for Brown. Jones was very efficient from the field going 8-for-12 from the floor. Charlotte Jewell finished in double-figures with 11 points and had a career-high eight assists to go along with six rebounds.
Brown (5-11, 0-4 Ivy) took a one-point lead into the final quarter and a three-point play by Jones but the Bears up 59-57 with 8:47 left to go. At that point, Brown's offense went cold as Yale () used a 6-0 run over three minutes to jump ahead 63-59. Brown broke its scoreless stretch with another layup from Jones just under the five-minute mark. Over a minute later, Jewell picked up a steal and hit a jumper to tie the game at 63.
The teams traded baskets over the next couple of minutes and the score was tied 67-67 with 1:28 left. Amanda Latkany picked up a steal with 30 seconds left in the game and Brown called a timeout with five seconds left to set up a play. Yale stole the inbounds pass but Jones blocked a layup attempt out of bounds. With under two seconds, Christen McCann got a driving layup to fall to put Yale ahead 69-67. Latkany had to inbound the ball from the baseline and her pass was stolen to end the game.
The Bears had one of its best shooting games of the season, shooting 47.2 percent from the floor to just 38.9 for the Bulldogs. Brown was a solid 8-for-18 from three-point range and 9-for-10 from the free throw line.
Latkany led Brown with nine rebounds but the Bears were outrebounded by 12 and were outscored 22-0 by the Bulldogs in second chance points.
Led by 16 points from Mauricio in the first half, Brown used multiple runs, including a 12-0 run to earn a game-high 11-point lead with just under seven minutes in the first half.
The game featured 13 lead changes and 11 ties.
Yale was led by McCann with 19 points and three Bulldogs finished in double-figures.
Brown's next contest will be a home game against Columbia on Saturday (Jan. 22) at 2 p.m. at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
