PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's soccer team defeated perennial power Oklahoma State 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field. The Bears trailed in the first half, but goals from Rebecca Rosen and Ava Seelenfreund would tie the game and put Brown in front for good.
"I think today was just an example of the potential this team has," head coach Kia McNeill said. "Oklahoma State is a tremendous team, top 25 team in the country. When we all show up and we play like a team, we can play with anybody in the country."
The first-ever meeting between the Bears and Cowgirls lived up to the hype. A tightly contested game from start to finish, neither side was able to break through during the opening 25 minutes of action. It wasn't until the 28th minute that Mollie Breiner put OSU on the board. The Brown defense attempted to clear a Cowgirl corner, but the ball was pushed out to Breiner who was able to run onto it and fire a low rocket into the bottom right corner of the net from 25 yards out.
The Bears would not go quietly as the first half came to a close. They were awarded a free kick from 40 yards out and Kayla Duran sent a beautiful ball into the box that Rosen was able to elevate for and redirect into the goal.
A pair of beautiful saves from Bear goalie Kayla Thompson kept the game tied early in the second half. In the 50th minute and again in the 73rd, Thompson was able to get low and keep a couple of hard shots from putting the Cowgirls back in front.
Her offense rewarded those efforts by taking the lead in the 78th minute. Zoe Maxwell sent a ball out of the 18-yard box and straight back to Lexi Quinn. Quinn immediately crossed it back into the center of the box and a diving Seelenfreund was able to head it home.
Despite consistent pressure from the OSU offense in the remaining ten minutes, Brown's defense stood strong and was able to finish out the impressive victory.
The Bears ended up with 11 shots to the Cowgirls' nine. OSU out earned the Bears in corners 10-4. Thompson would finish the day with five saves.
On the season, Seelenfreund has tied Brittany Raphino for the team lead of both two goals and five points. Duran leads the team with three assists.
Up next for the Bears, they travel to UConn this Thursday, Sept. 9 for a 7 p.m. matchup.
