PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown volleyball team opened its season with a 3-1 win over Bryant Friday evening. The Bears begin the season at 1-0, while also handing the Bulldogs their first loss of 2021 dropping Bryant to 3-1.
Three Bears led the way with double-digit kills on the night. Kate Sheire had 14, and Jilienne Widener and Victoria Vo followed with 13 and 10 respectively. Cierra Jenkins led Brown with 24 digs and Vo added 15. Jenkins also led the team with 38 assists.
Bryant started out fast by winning the first set 25-23. The Bears took an early 8-3 lead in the set, but the Bulldogs would fight back. Down 22-21, Bryant used a kill, a Bear error, and a service ace to take the 24-22 lead and would finish it off over the next two points.
In the second set, it was Brown's turn to stage a comeback after trailing 18-14. The Bears claimed five-straight points, three of which came from Widener kills, to take the 22-18 lead. An attack error sealed things for Brown in set two.
The third set came down to the wire. Bryant held a 24-22 lead, but Brown won four-straight points to take the win. Kills by Vo, Jenkins, and Beau Vanderlaan put it at 25-24 and an attack error on the Bulldogs gave Brown their second set victory.
The fourth set was the only of the night that was not that close. Brown put together two separate point streaks of eight and six in the set to relatively easily claim the 25-14 win and take the match.
The Bears continue action at the Bryant Invitational tomorrow with matches against Boston College and Holy Cross.
