Volleyball Sweeps Harvard in Home Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball (9-6, 4-2 Ivy) opened its home slate with a sweep over Harvard (3-11, 2-4 Ivy) on Friday (Oct. 17), 25-15, 25-20, 25-12.
Sophia Wolfson led the Bears with another stellar match, finishing with 12 kills, hitting .478. Mariia Sidorova was second on the team with 11 kills, hitting .385. Ally Panzloff was just shy of double digits with nine kills.
Julia Kakkis spread the ball around, picking up 31 assists.
Brown's defense held Harvard to just .070 hitting as the Bears picked up 42 digs and six blocks on the night. Jessie Golden led Brown with 17 digs and Kakkis was second, picking up nine. At the net, Wolfson led Brown with four blocks while Sidorova, Kakkis and Sarah Shaw each had two.
The Bears also dominated on the service line, finishing the match with 11 aces.
Brown jumped ahead early in the first with a 6-2 lead but Harvard pulled back into the set at 12-11. Brown responded by scoring 11 of the next 12 points, featuring three kills by Wolfson and two aces by Sidorova. A kill by Panzloff ended the set for Brown.
Set two was tight early with Brown getting kills by Sidorova and Kakkis to take a four-point lead at 15-11. The Bears kept Harvard at bay for most of the set with the Crimson scoring two-straight to make the score 23-20 before a kill by Sidorova and block by the duo of Kakkis and Wolfson to end the frame.
A 3-0 run by Harvard made the score 8-7 in favor of the Bears early in the third but the Bears rattled off six-straight points that finished with an ace by Eve McLaury to go ahead 14-7. The Bears kept the pressure on with a 4-0 run capped by back-to-back Wolfson kills to make it 22-10. Panzloff closed out the match with back-to-back kills.
GAME NOTES
Brown has now won nine of the last 10 matches against Harvard and has won 15 of the last 18 sets against the Crimson.
Tonight was the second time Brown has had double-figure aces and did not allow an ace in a match this year as the Bears has 12 aces with no reception errors against Princeton earlier this season.
Wolfson and Sidorova now both have 10 matches this season with double-figure kills.
Golden's 17 digs are her most this season in a three-set match.
Wolfson has now hit over .400 in nine matches this season and in four of her last five matches. Wolfson has not hit less than .300 since Sept. 19 against UConn (eight-straight matches).
