PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's soccer team defeated Dartmouth 4-1 in its opening game of Ivy League play Sunday evening at Stevenson-Pincince Field. Two goals from Brittany Raphino early in the first half set the tone and two more by Ava Seelenfreund and Zoe Maxwell in the second sealed the win for the Bears.
"In the first half we started out really strong, had high intensity, were connecting passes and got two early goals," senior Zoe Maxwell said. "Then we kind of dropped our level a little bit towards the end of the first half and halftime gave us a great time regroup and set the standard high again. We came out strong in the second half and were able to get two more goals. I just think that it came from the energy on the field, off the field, our bench was great, our crowd was great and it was just a great first Ivy League win."
Maxwell recorded the assist on Raphino's first goal that came in the eighth minute of action. Maxwell crossed the ball in from the right flank and Raphino got just enough on it with her head to flick it in the left side netting.
Ten minutes later Maesyn G'Bye sent a long throw into the box that Raphino was able to again deposit into the goal with a twist of her head. Dartmouth got one back in the 33rd minute when a few bodies got tangled inside the Bear's six-yard box and Maddie Mills drove the loose ball in to cut Brown's lead in half.
Play got physical towards the end of the first half and that trend continued into the second, with both sides picking up a handful of hard fouls.
"There's so much on the line for these games," head coach Kia McNeill said. "Every game is almost like a championship and you have to be willing to be aggressive and take those tackles and take those fouls.
"I thought our team played really well. Scoring four goals against a good team like that is a good sign for us going forward to gain confidence and a great way to start the Ivy League."
The Bears were awarded a penalty kick in the 67th minute which Seelenfreund snuck into the bottom right corner just out of the Big Green goalie's reach. Maxwell capped the scoring in the 79th minute when she settled a cross from Layrssa Hamblen just in front of the Dartmouth goal and quickly beat the keeper with a right-footed shot.
On the day, Brown outshot Dartmouth 20-8, while the Big Green held the advantage in corners at 6-5. Kayla Thompson made three saves in goal as the Bear defense did a good job of keeping the pressure off of her for most of the game.
Brown continues Ivy League play next Saturday, Oct. 2 at 3 p.m. on the road against Columbia.
