NEW YORK – The Brown women's soccer team improved to 2-0 in Ivy League play with a 2-0 win over Columbia Saturday afternoon. Goals from Ava Seelenfreund and Maesyn G'Bye, as well as a pair of assists by Evelyn Calhoon, lifted the Bears to victory on the road.
"Today was definitely a battle between two very talented teams," head coach Kia McNeill said. "I don't think we had our best day, but it's a sign of a good team when you can walk away with a road win and shutout even when you weren't at your best.
"I thought we made some critical plays at key moments that allowed us to come out with the result. Kayla Thompson made some great saves, including the PK, and Ava and Evie gave us a much-needed spark off the bench. We've had a great start to the Ivy season and look forward to hosting Princeton next weekend."
Seelenfreund opened the scoring for the Bears in the 31st minute when she took a long-range shot from about 25 yards out that soared over the goalie's hands and into the back of the net. The first half would end with Brown up 1-0 even though the Lions held the edge in shots 6-4 and corners 2-0.
Kayla Thompson came up huge just three minutes into the second half when a foul was called in the box resulting in a Columbia penalty kick. The Lions' Madi Pilla stepped up and drove a hard PK to the left, but Thompson, diving to her right, was able to keep it out of the goal and maintain the lead for the Bears.
G'Bye would put the game away in the 60th minute when Calhoon fed her the ball and G'Bye curled a right-footed shot into the upper corner of the net, giving the goalie no chance to make the save.
On the day, the Lions did take more shots than Brown, 13-11, but the Bears put more on goal, 7-5. Thompson made five saves to earn her first solo shutout of the season and the team's third.
Brown will return home next Saturday, Oct. 9 for a 3 p.m. matchup with Princeton.
