Field Hockey Remains Unbeaten with 5-1 Victory Over Bryant

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown field hockey team (3-0, 0-0 Ivy) won its third straight game to open the 2021 season with a 5-1 victory over Bryant (0-5, 0-0 NEC) Friday afternoon at Goldberger Family Field. Four different Bears found the back of the net with Danielle van Rootselaar scoring twice.

"Today was a hard-fought match," head coach Jill Reeve said. "I was glad to see us score goals on corners and in the open field of play. Our backfield did a nice job handling Bryant's waves of attack. We are looking forward to hitting the road tomorrow to take on the Catamounts.

Lindsey Ross scored her first career goal to give the Bears a 1-0 lead just over five minutes into the game, banging home a rebound off an initial shot from van Rootselaar. Ana Claire Piacentini doubled the Bear lead two minutes later, deflecting a van Rootselaar shot off a penalty corner past Bryant goalie Marijn Jaarsma (13 saves).

The Bulldogs cut into the Brown lead late in the first quarter as Carson Dennis found the back of the net shortly after a Bryant penalty corner.

Van Rootselaar scored a highlight-reel goal to make it 3-1 Brown in the final minutes of the second quarter. The senior danced around multiple Bryant defenders before firing a backhand shot into the top left corner of the goal.

The Bears pushed the lead to 4-1 just 50 seconds into the second half on a 2-on-0 breakway. Imogen Govan carried the ball down the right side before slotting a pass under Jaarsma to Mikayla Walsh, who tapped it in for the easy goal.

Brown controlled play through the third quarter and into the fourth quarter where van Rootselaar again carried the ball through the Bryant defense before sneaking a shot past Jaarsma from the end line with nine minutes to play.

The Bears finished the game with a 23-7 advantage in shots and a 19-3 advantage in shots on goal. Brown also held a 12-6 advantage over Bryant in penalty corners.

Brown hits the road for a non-conference match-up against the Vermont Catamounts on Sunday, September 12. The game is slated to begin at 12 p.m. and will stream on America East TV.
