BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Brown Bears field hockey team entered the fourth quarter in a scoreless tie at Vermont, but a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes lifted the Vermont Catamounts to a 2-0 win Sunday at Moulton Winder Field. The loss marks Brown's first of the season.
Brown drops to 3-1 (0-0 Ivy League) in the 2021 season while Vermont improves its record to 4-2 in 2021.
"I am proud of our effort today," head coach Jill Reeve said. "Overall the game was an even battle. UVM was able to capitalize on its opportunities even though our backfield played a very solid game. I'm looking forward to taking what we have achieved forward, we're doing a lot of good things."
The first quarter finished scoreless with UVM holding a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal. Brown had a pair of penalty corner opportunities while the Catamounts finished the opening quarter with three penalty corner chances.
The second quarter played out much the same as the first quarter and the half finished scoreless. Neither team was able to break through the defense for a shot on goal in the quarter.
Each team was assessed a green card in the quarter while UVM also picked up a yellow card that carried into the second half.
The Catamounts were awarded a penalty stroke 4:47 into the third quarter. Jodie Brine (8 saves) kicked out her left leg to make a fantastic save on the penalty stroke from UVM's Haley Buffenbarger. Brine made another strong save off a UVM penalty corner a minute later.
After back-and-forth action for most of the third quarter, Brine stopped a shot from UVM's Ellie Reed in the final minute of the third quarter to send the game to the fourth quarter in a scoreless tie.
The Cats broke the deadlock with 14:41 to play in the fourth quarter off a penalty corner. Sophia Drees blasted a shot through traffic off the corner for the goal with assists from Puck Kwaspen and Kate Hall.
UVM sealed the game with 2:25 to play as Clodagh Ferry deflected a shot from Puck Kwaspen off a penalty corner for the insurance tally.
The Catamounts finished the game with a 16-7 advantage in shots and a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal. UVM finished the game with an 8-4 edge in penalty corners.
Brown hits the West Coast next weekend for two games, taking on California (3-1, 0-0 AE) on Friday, September 17 and UC Davis (3-2, 0-0 AE) on Sunday, September 19. Next weekend's trip marks the program's first-ever trip to The Golden State.
