PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University men's crew freshman Gabriel Mahler, senior Henry Hollingsworth, senior Jaap de Jong, and senior Thomas Phelps have earned IRCA All-American honors, the Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches Association announced on Wednesday.
2021 IRCA All-Americans
Mahler (Prague, Czech Republic) gained First Team accolades, Hollingsworth (Dover, Mass.) garnered Second Team plaudits, and de Jong (Amsterdam, Netherlands) and Phelps (London, England) collected Honorable Mention laurels. Phelps also gained IRCA Scholar-Athlete honors this season.
The quartet helped Brown place fifth as a team in the Ten Eyck Team Standings at the 2021 Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships. Competing with the first varsity eight, the group helped the Bears' 1V8 place ninth at IRAs. In the semifinals, the boat came just 0.514 seconds away from qualifying for a spot in the grand final.
In its inaugural year, the Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches Association based All-America selection on the strength of finish of the institution's varsity boat, the Nomination Rank within institution, and coach's comments, individual achievements, and erg score.
The IRCA recognized 73 rowers and coxswains as either First Team, Second Team, or Honorable Mention All-Americans. The group represented 28 teams (23 heavyweight and 5 lightweight) from the 59 member programs.
