Men’s Crew Advances 3V8 to Grand Final, 1V8, 2V8 to Petite Finals at IRAs

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Brown University men's crew advanced its third varsity eight to the grand final and sent its first varsity eight and second varsity eight to the petite finals after the first day of racing at the 2021 IRA National Championships on Friday at Mercer Lake.
Brown's first varsity eight placed 10th in its time trial in the morning before placing third in its semifinal in the afternoon – just 0.514 seconds out of a qualifying spot for the grand finals. The Bears' second varsity eight finished 10th in the time trial and third in its semifinal while the third varsity eight took sixth in the time trial and second in its semifinal. The regatta fielded 30 entries in the 1V8, 26 entries in the 2V8, and 16 entries in the 3V8.
For Saturday's finals, Brown's third varsity eight will race in the grand final at 8:20 a.m., the second varsity eight will compete in the petite final at 9:00 a.m., and the first varsity eight will race in the petite final at 9:50 a.m.

Brown will conclude the 2021 IRA Regatta with the first varsity eight petite final on Saturday at 9:50 a.m. The Bears will face off against Boston University, George Washington, Princeton, Wisconsin, and Navy.

Four schools – California, Dartmouth, Northeastern, and Washington – qualified all three boats for the grand finals while Syracuse advanced two boats (1V8, 2V8). Brown's 3V8, Stanford's 1V8, Princeton's 2V8, and Navy's 3V8 rounded out the 18-boat grand final field in the three team scoring events.
Evening Semifinal Recap
Opening the evening semifinals, Brown's first varsity eight placed third in a tight race in A/B/C semifinal one out of lane six with a time of 6:21.720, moving to Saturday's petite final. The Bears finished just 0.514 seconds behind second-place Stanford (6:21.206) and a spot in the grand final.
In the 1V8, Brown topped Navy (6:24.409) by 2.689 seconds, Oregon State (6:40.231) by 18.511 seconds, and Temple (6:44.600) by 22.880 seconds. California took the semifinal with a time of 6:19.449 – 2.271 seconds ahead of the Bears.
The Bears' second varsity eight placed third in A/B/C semifinal three out of lane six with a time of 6:26.105, proceeding to Saturday's petite final. Brown defeated Navy (6:40.707) by 14.602 seconds, Williams (6:55.039) by 28.934 seconds, and UC San Diego (7:00.839) by 34.734 seconds while falling to Dartmouth (6:21.919) by 4.186 seconds and Syracuse (6:23.319) by 2.786 seconds.
Brown's third varsity eight took second place in A/B/C semifinal one out of lane five behind a time of 6:35.873, advancing to Saturday's grand final. The Bears defeated Drexel (6:39.916) by 4.043 seconds, Temple (6:47.658) by 11.785 seconds, and Marist (7:02.621) by 26.748 seconds. Washington won the race in 6:33.673 – 2.200 seconds ahead of Brown.
Morning Time Trials Recap
In the team's first race of the day, Brown's first varsity eight came in 10th place out of a field of 30 boats in its time trial behind a time of 5:34.184, advancing to the A/B/C semifinals on Friday afternoon. The Bears finished 0.688 seconds ahead of 11th-place Wisconsin (5:34.872) and 0.027 seconds behind ninth-place Navy. Brown stood just 1.461 seconds back of sixth-place Northeastern (5:32.723).
Washington (5:26.416), Dartmouth (5:27.476), and Stanford (5:29.299) took the top three spots in the first varsity eight time trial.
The Bears came in 10th place in the second varsity eight time trial out of a field of 26 entries behind a time of 5:53.254, advancing to the A/B/C semifinals on Friday afternoon. Brown topped 11th-place Temple (5:57.911) by 4.657 seconds and trailed ninth-place Navy (5:50.351) by 2.903 seconds. Washington (5:33.779), California (5:38.383), and Syracuse (5:40.663) claimed the trial's top three spots.
Brown's third varsity eight came in sixth place out of a field of 16 boats in its time trial with a time of 6:23.714, moving to Friday afternoon's A/B/C semifinals. The Bears bested seventh-place Drexel (6:24.421) by 0.707 seconds and fell to fifth-place Northeastern (6:16.924) by 6.790 seconds. Washington (6:02.469), California (6:09.949), and Dartmouth (6:12.143) gained the trial's top three spots.
Overall, Brown posted a 46-23 record in the time trials behind a 20-9 mark from the 1V8, 16-9 record from the 2V8, and 10-5 mark from the 3V8.
Officials moved the start of the time trials up one hour such that the trials began at 7:00 a.m.
