PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University softball alumna Janet Leung '16 has earned nomination to Softball Canada's team for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Softball Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee announced on Wednesday.
The 15 athletes on the team were selected by Softball Canada's coaching staff in accordance with the Women's National Team Olympic Team Selection Process. Softball returns to the Olympic Games after being left off at London 2012 and Rio 2016. Canada narrowly missed the podium with a fourth-place finish the last time the sport appeared at Beijing 2008.
In 2019, Leung – a native of Mississauga, Ontario – helped Softball Canada qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games behind a second-place finish at the 2019 WBSC Softball Americas Qualifier held from August 25 to September 1 in Surrey, British Columbia. Leung is set to become Brown's first-ever Olympian in the sport of softball.
Canada became the fifth country to qualify for Tokyo 2020, joining Italy, Japan, Mexico, and the United States prior to Australia gaining the sixth and final spot. The women's softball competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will take place from July 21-27, 2021 at the Fukushima Azuma Baseball Stadium and the Yokohama Baseball Stadium.
Also in summer 2019, Leung helped Canada earn a silver medal at the Pan American Games and win a second consecutive gold medal at the Canada Cup after competing in National Pro Fastpitch Softball with the Canadian Wild.

During the summer of 2018, Leung won gold at the Canada Cup – earning the tournament's Best Defensive Player award – before capturing bronze at the Women's Softball World Championship.
A four-time All-Ivy selection, Leung finished her career third all-time at Brown in at bats (493) and fifth in doubles (35) while starting all 151 games over her four years. For her Brown career, she posted a .304 batting average, 150 hits, 35 doubles, 79 runs, and 52 RBIs.
Canada is ranked third in the WBSC Women's Softball World Rankings and has won three bronze medals over the last five WBSC World Championships, including back-to-back bronze medals in 2016 and 2018. The team won gold at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games and captured silver medals at Guadalajara 2011 and Lima 2019.
