INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- UConn outshot Brown 30-16. The 30 shots on goal ties for the fewest allowed by the Bears this season.
- UConn also held a 26-24 edge on faceoffs.
- Both teams combined to go 0-for-4 on the power play.
- Sophomore defenseman Cassidy Piersiak led the Bears with four shots on goal while freshman forward Anna Hurd added three.
- Sophomore Kaley Doyle made 27 saves in net for the Bears.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UConn nabbed the first quality chance of the game on a shorthanded breakaway bid just over seven minutes in, but hit the post.
- UConn outshot Brown 8-6 in a scoreless first period of play, in which Brown went 0-for-2 on the power play and UConn was 0-for-1 with the man advantage.
- Brown got a good backhanded look from Cameron Sikich early in the second period, but the attempt was saved.
- UConn struck first just over five minutes into the second period courtesy of Coryn Tormala, on a puck that was picked up in the right wing circle and backhanded inside the left post to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead a 5:05 of the period.
- UConn added to their lead at the 13:47 mark when Viki Harkness took a pass at the blue line, skated the puck down around the back of the net and out into the left wing circle, then sending a wrist shot top shelf over the blocker of the goaltender for a 2-0 Husky lead.
- Doyle made two huge stops right at the halfway point of the period from in close to keep it a two-goal game. She later added two more big stops with under two minutes to play off shots from the slot, and two in the final minute off breakaway attempts.
- The Huskies scored a crucial insurance goal 16:39 on the third period when Morgan Wabick pounced on a rebound off a shot from the blue line and buried it to give UConn the late 3-0 lead with under four minutes to play.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH
- "Kaley was solid in goal. I think the defense did a better job in front of her clearing out, being aggressive in front of her and allowed her to see more pucks, but we need to battle and get some more rebounds into the corner."
- "For the third goal, we were going for it and having our defense be a little more active. It was disappointing because we were about to pull the goalie, but it wasn't really a character goal that we would give up."
- "I think we played well at times, but at the end of the day we have to score goals. We passed up some shots throughout the game. We talked about that between periods, but just didn't get it going on that end."
