HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Brown women's hockey team came up short in its first road game of the season on Friday night, falling at No. 4 Colgate by a score of 7-1.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: MELANIE RUZZI
"We just have to be better. We need to make improvements as we go, and we did that during the game and were able to play an even third period. We need to be better at staying out of the box and preventing their lethal scorers from being on the ice during the power play. We grew as a team tonight, but we're a young team and we need to keep growing."
"We asked Grace (Kedziora) to step in and she did an outstanding job. She was ready right off the bench and was engaged throughout the game, and made some significant saves for us. The one goal she did allow, she made the initial stop but we didn't bail her out on the rebound. She did an exceptional job."
The Bears will jump right back into action on tomorrow afternoon when they take on Cornell at 3 p.m.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Senior Shay Maloney scored her second goal of the season for Brown (0-4-1, 0-3-0 ECAC).
- Reigning ECAC Rookie of the Month Anna Hurd picked up her team-leading third assist of the season.
- Cassidy Piersiak also picked up an assist.
- Grace Kedziora made her collegiate debut in relief in goal, stopping 15 of the 16 shots she faced in 28 minutes of action.
- Colgate had six different goal scorers, with Kaitlyn O'Donahoe scoring twice and Sydney Bard adding three assists.
- Four of the Raiders (11-2-0, 3-0-0) goals came on the power play, finishing the night 4-for-8 with the man-advantage.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Colgate came out of the gate firing, scoring twice in the opening five minutes to take an early 2-0 lead.
- The Raiders struck again at 8:42 on a quick give-and-go in front of the net to go up 3-0.
- Brown got on the board when Piersiak sent a pass down low behind the net, Hurd then sent a pass from behind the net to Maloney coming down the slot, and she slid it through the legs of the goaltender to cut the deficit to 3-1 with 10:03 remaining in the first.
- The Raiders answered right back just over two minutes later on the power play to get the lead back to three, and carried a 4-1 lead into the first intermission.
- Hailey Klitczko made a big save on a 2-0 break-in, sliding to her right so make the stop in the opening minute of the second period.
- Colgate scored three times with the man-advantage before the end of the period, striking at the 5:58 mark on a shot through a screen in front that snuck under the crossbar. They added power play goals at the 12:11 mark and then again with 1:15 remaining in the period to take a 7-1 into the second intermission.
- Kedziora stopped all 12 shots she faced in the third period and the Bears successfully killed off two penalties.
