Cornell (1-4-1, 0-3-1 ECAC) is receiving votes in the latest USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine national top 10 Poll. The tie is the second of the season for the Bears (0-4-2, 0-3-1 ECAC).
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Senior Shay Maloney scored the second straight game for Brown, putting the Bears in front in the third period. She posted a team-leading five shots on net.
- Maddie Stockfish got the Bears on the board with her second goal of the season in the second period.
- Anna Shelden also netted her second goal of the season to tie the game midway through the third period.
- Maya Mangiafico picked up an assist, and Cameron Sikich assisted on both the game-tying and go-ahead goals in the third period. She now leads the Bears with four assists on the season.
- Kaley Doyle made her second start of the season in goal for Brown and stopped 36 of the 39 shots she faced.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After a scoreless first period, Stockfish got the Bears on the board first off the assist from Mangiafico at the 11:57 mark. Mangiafico won a faceoff following an icing call, and Stockfish buried it top shelf from the slot just over the blocker of the goaltender.
- Cornell struck twice before the end of the period, scoring two goals in a span of 1:15, the second of which came on the power play, to take a 2-1 lead with 35 seconds left in the period.
- Trailing by one just past the midway point of the third period, Brown tied things up courtesy of Shelden, who crashed the net and slid a rebound under the goaltender to knot it at 2-2 at 11:03 of the period.
- Over four minutes later, Maloney put the Bears in front off another assist from Sikich, jumping on a loose puck in front and chipping it over the goaltender's glove and into the net with 4:26 remaining in regulation.
- Cornell pulled the goaltender with just over two-and-a-half minutes to go, and found the back of the net to tie the game with 1:30 left in regulation.
- The Bears stormed the net in the overtime period, outshooting Cornell 6-1 over the five-minute session, but was unable to score. Brown earned a power play opportunity as well in overtime, getting off five shots, three of which went on goal.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: MELANIE RUZZI:
- "It was a really good bounce back game from yesterday. We played a complete game throughout the overtime and had great goaltending from Kaley, she had some huge and timely saves for us, and we were able to get some gritty goals."
- "This is the picture this team strives to paint. All the gritty plays, the backchecks, getting our feet moving and keeping our sticks on the ice. We had a great effort and good execution of that effort."
- "The end of the game, obviously it's tough to give up the tying goal. One of things we didn't do this weekend was win draws and when you don't do that, it's hard to get possession back. That's something we need to improve on."
- "I also want to give shout out to Brown Volleyball for winning the Ivy League title tonight. That's a big moment for them and a well-deserved honor."
