Women's Basketball falls to Central Connecticut, 67-60

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's basketball fell to Central Connecticut State 67-60 on Thursday (Nov. 18) in the Bears home opener. Isabella Maruicio scored a career-high 18 points to lead the Bears in the defeat.
Brown (1-3) trailed by as much as 19 in the third quarter before getting the score back to down seven points but could not get any closer.
Kyla Jones joined Mauricio in double-figures with 14 points, doing much of her damage from the free throw line, going 8-for-9 from the stripe. Jones and Mauricio have now each scored in double-figures in three of the four games this year. Mya Murray finished the game with eight points and a team-high seven rebounds.
The Bears finished at 33 percent shooting, but that was boosted by shooting over 57 percent from the floor in the final quarter. The Bears struggled from behind the three-point arc early before going 5-for-9 from deep in the final quarter. Mauricio finished the game 4-for-8 from three to lead Brown.
With the score tied at six, Central Connecticut (1-2) went on a 7-0 run to jump ahead 13-6. Brown cut it to three twice and later in the quarter a Charlotte Jewell three cut the lead to two but Brown trailed by six after the end of the first quarter.
Murray scored two baskets in the paint midway through the second quarter to cut the deficit to three both times but CCSU had an answer each time and pushed the lead to 12 as Brown went scoreless for over five minutes. Brown picked up three free throws to end the half down nine.
A Mauricio three early in the third cut the Blue Devil lead to eight but the Bears got just one free throw from Mauricio over the next three minutes as Central Connecticut extended the lead to 19.
Two free throws from Dani Short and a layup from Jones made the score 54-39 early in the fourth as the Bears tried to claw their way back into the game. Free throws from Jones and a three by Maddie Mullin cut the lead to 11. Mauricio hit back-to-back threes to get the game to single digits with 2:27 left in the game but Central Connecticut State responded each time the Bears made a basket. Mauricio's three with 36 seconds left cut the lead to seven but Brown couldn't get any close.
Central Connecticut was led by Ashley Berube with 17 points and Claire Sunderland-Case with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
Brown will stay at home for its next game with a matchup against Wagner on Saturday (Nov. 20) at 4 p.m.
