PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's basketball dropped its matchup with Wagner after a second-half surge from the Seahawks. Three Bears finished in double-figures in the 67-57 loss.
Kyla Jones led the team with 14 points, grabbed four rebounds and snagged a career-high six steals. Mya Murray scored a career-high 12 points, going 8-for-12 from the free throw line and added a career-high with five blocks. Murray also finished the game with five rebounds. Maddie Mullin found her rhythm from deep, going 4-for-6 for 12 points and added three rebounds.
Amanda Latkany pulled down a career-best 13 boards as Brown won the rebound battle 41-35, for the first time this season. Latkany also finished the game with nine points.
"I want to give Wagner credit, they played hard and we didn't attack enough," said head coach Monique LeBlanc. "Prior to tonight they fouled a lot more than they did tonight and we weren't attacking hard against their pressure."
Brown got off to a hot start, shooting over 46 percent from the floor in the first quarter while holding Wagner to just 26 percent shooting in the first ten minutes. Grace Kirk hit a three to put Brown up three halfway through the first but Wagner took the lead a minute later. The Bears ended the quarter on a run with a free throw from Murray and a jumper by Jones to take an 18-15 lead after one.
Latkany scored five-straight points to start the second quarter, pushing the Brown lead to seven. After a basket by Wagner, Mullin hit her first three of the night to put Brown up eight. Mullin's three with 3:34 was the last time Brown would score in the quarter as Wagner closed out the quarter on a 6-0 run making the Bears lead just two at halftime.
Brown got a little sloppy with the basketball in the third quarter, committing eight turnovers that lead to 10 points for the Seahawks. Brown also put Wagner to the free throw line early as Wagner went 8-for-8 from the stripe in the quarter, led by Emilija Krista Grava who went 6-for-6 in the quarter and scored 10 of her game-high 26 points in the third.
"It's very difficult to win a college basketball game when you turn the ball over 28 times," said LeBlanc. "Those are momentum plays and they hurt us. It can make you feel like you are constantly back on defense."
The third quarter was a quarter of two runs as the Seahawks took an 11-point lead on a 10-0 run but Brown responded with back-to-back threes from Mullin and two jumpers from Jewell for its own 10-0 run to cut the lead to one at 45-44. Wagner got back up by five but Mullin hit her fourth three of the night at the buzzer to make it a 49-47 Wagner lead after three quarters.
"It was great to see Maddie shoot the ball well," said LeBlanc. "She is someone that we know can make shots and we want her to shoot the ball and be confident when she is out there."
Brown fell behind by eight early in the quarter but Latkany and Jewell each scored to make it a four-point game. Wagner responded and in the end, Brown had no answer for Wagner's Kem Nwabudu who scored 14 fourth-quarter points and kept the Bears at bay for the rest of the game.
Brown will hit the road for its next game with a clash at Hartford on Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 5 p.m.
