Women’s Hockey’s Comeback Falls Short in 3-2 Loss to Princeton

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A pair of power play goals from seniors Lizzy Gross and Shay Maloney helped pull the Bears within one goal with just over a minute left to play, but the comeback bid fell short as Brown fell to Princeton 3-2 at Meehan Auditorium on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Brown will have five days off before its next game, hitting the road for the first time this season next Friday with a showdown at current No. 4/5 Colgate on Friday evening, before heading to No. 9 Cornell on Saturday.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Princeton outshot the Bears 30-25 in the game, while the faceoffs were close to even, at 28-27 Princeton.
- Brown was 2-for-6 on the power play, while the Tigers were 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
- Maloney and Gross each scored their first goals of the season, while Maloney had a team-leading five shots on goal.
- Sophomore Cassidy Piersiak, freshman Anna Hurd and freshman Abby Hancock each picked up assist for Brown.
- Sophomore Kaley Doyle stopped 27 of the 30 shots she faced in goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Tigers, who are receiving votes in both of the national polls this week, jumped on the board quickly just 39 seconds into the game on the first career goals for Dominique Cormier.
- Brown put eight shots on target in the first period, and had two chances on the power play, but were unable to crack the scoreboard.
- Neither team found the back of the net again until just over six minutes into the second period, when Princeton struck for two goals in 42 seconds, the first of which came on the power play, to take a 3-0 lead on goals from Maggie Connors and Mia Coene.
- Brown got on the board at the 13:04 mark of the second period, when Lizzy Gross scored her first of the season late in the power play off assists from Piersiak and Hancock.
- The Bears came though once more on the power play late in regulation to make it a one goal game. Skating 6-on-4 with the extra attacker, Maloney scored off a dish from Hurd with 1:36 left in regulation. It marked the Bears second goal with the extra attacker through the first four games.
