Fast start leads water polo past Iona

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown men's water polo picked up a 15-7 win over Iona to begin a three-game weekend at home. Two Bears scored three goals in the win over the Gaels.
Brown got off to a good start, scoring four goals in the first and keeping Iona off the board in the first eight minutes. Ben Kirshon and Gabe Chang scored a minute apart to put Brown up 2-0. Two minutes later, Andrew Penner tallied his first goal of the night to make it 3-0. Matt Simko scored the last goal of the period for the Bears.
The Bears got a goal from Ben Resko to start the second to jump ahead before Iona finally got on the board. A flurry of offense came from the Gaels over the next two minutes as Iona went on a 4-0 run to make the score 5-4. Cole Atwell stopped the run with a goal and Kirshon and Penner each scored late in the half to put the Bears up 8-4 at the half.
The third quarter also belonged to Brown with the Bears winning the quarter 5-1. Leo Berkman scored less than a minute in to the quarter. Iona scored with 6:21 on the clock but Penner responded 20 seconds later. Over the last three minutes of the quarter, Evan Moore scored twice with Enright and Kirshon each tallying one goal as the lead ballooned to 13-5.
Enright and Atwell each scored a goal in the fourth quarter as the Bears ended any threat Iona might have brought.
Joe Gallagher picked up the win in goal with 15 saves on the day.
Brown will continue play at home on Sunday with games against St. Francis Brooklyn at 10 a.m. and Princeton at 3 p.m.
