PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's soccer team defeated Penn 2-0 Saturday afternoon. Two first-half goals built the Bears a lead that the Quakers were unable to overcome.
"The guys needed to be able to come out and match how tough it was out here," head coach Pat Laughlin said in reference to the steady downpour that lasted the full 90 minutes. "And I think they did, for sure."
The Bears got things going early in the first half when, in the 17th minute, Paul Elliott sent home a volley from 25 yards out that took the Penn defense by surprise. Just five minutes later, Owen Schwartz cleaned up a loose ball in the six-yard box off a Charlie Adams corner to double the lead.
Brown's defense was lock-down in the first half as it did not allow a shot on goal during the first 45.
Things quieted down in the second half. The Quakers did manage their first shot on goal, but Max Waldau was up to the task, making five saves throughout the half, including two miraculous ones in the final 10 minutes to keep Penn off the board. The Bears would not score in the second either, but they didn't need to as the two-goal lead they built in the first would hold.
"There were so many good performances," Laughlin said. "I'm really pleased for them to be able to get this type of result. I'm proud of them. The way we played during the first 80 minutes, allowed us to fight through the final 10. That was really important."
On the day, Brown outshot Penn 18-13, while the Quakers earned more corners, 8-6.
The Bears will travel to Central Connecticut next Wednesday, Nov. 3 before returning to Ivy League play on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 4 p.m. at Yale.
