PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Anna Hurd scored two goals as Brown tied Penn State 2-2 in its first game in 610 days to begin the 2021-22 season on Saturday (Oct. 23).
After falling behind 1-0 with a goal late in the second period, Brown (0-0-1) picked up its first goal of the game on the power play. Up a skater after a penalty for interference, Brown went on the attack. After a couple shots wide of the net, Hurd finished off the attack with her first goal of the season assisted by Cameron Sikich.
The tie did not last long as Penn State (2-3-2) tallied its second goal of the game just 30 seconds later as Natalie Heising beat Hayley Kliczko to give the Nittany Lions the lead back. Kliczko came up big late in the game with three saves over the course of a minute to keep Penn State from making it a two-goal game.
With just over a minute left in the game, Brown pulled Kliczko to gain the extra attacker and with another scrum in front of the net, Hurd came up big again after a rebound from a shot by Sikich. Hurd's second goal of the game came with 53 seconds left on the clock and sent the game to overtime.
"This is such a resilient group. There is never a give-up and they don't lower their shoulders for even a second," said head coach Melanie Ruzzi. "They are in attack mode the entire time. All year we have been training to play four periods and its sort of funny and lucky that we got to play overtime today and we made the most of this game."
Brown got a quick shot in overtime by Anna Sheldon but Penn State's Josie Bothun made a good save. Shay Maloney had a couple of chances later in the period but Bothun made a couple more saves. Kliczko picked up three saves in the extra period to keep Penn State off the board and secure the point for the Bears.
Kliczko faces a barrage early, stopping 21 shots in the first two periods on her way to a 30-save night.
The Bears let a chance get by them in the second period after Penn State's Rene Gangarosa was called for a game-misconduct on a hit to the head of a Brown player. The Bears only got one shot off during the power play and also committed a penalty of their own during the five-minute major.
Brown and Penn State will face off against on Sunday (Oct. 24) at 2 p.m. at Meehan Auditorium.
